At the 2019 National Pharmacovigilance Conference held from August 23–24, Vinmec Times City Hospital was honored as one of the 15 institutions recognized for their outstanding performance in reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in 2018.
Pharmacovigilance at Vinmec Times City
Pharmacovigilance is a specialized activity involving the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse drug reactions or other drug-related issues within hospitals. ADR reporting is a core component of pharmacovigilance, contributing to the safe use of medications for patients.
With over 200 ADR reports submitted to the National Center for drug information and adverse drug reaction monitoring in 2018, Vinmec Times City International Hospital ranked among the top five hospitals nationwide in ADR reporting, alongside Bach Mai Hospital, Tu Du Hospital, National Lung Hospital, and Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital.
From its establishment, Vinmec Times City Hospital developed an ADR reporting process and designated clinical pharmacists to manage drug safety issues.
In September 2017, the hospital launched a Comprehensive quality improvement project for ADR reporting. The project aimed to increase the quantity and improve the quality of ADR reports, strengthen timely and complete validation and feedback processes for ADR reports. From there, provide information and counseling to patients experiencing significant or probable ADRs, minimize future ADR risks for patients.
Through this initiative, the number of high-quality ADR reports increased from 47 in 2016 to 167 in 2017, and 222 in 2018. As a result, Vinmec Times City Hospital received consecutive commendations from the Rector of Hanoi University of Pharmacy for excellence in ADR reporting in 2017 and 2018.
This success stems from the proactive involvement of the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and pharmacists in early ADR detection, timely intervention, and selecting alternative treatments to ensure therapeutic efficacy while reducing adverse effects for patients. This effort has significantly enhanced patient confidence and safety at Vinmec.
Furthermore, all ADR information is encrypted and recorded in the hospital’s management software system. These ADR reports not only enrich the national ADR database but also strengthen safety signals regarding drug-related adverse effects. This contributes to regulatory warnings and recommendations for the safer and more rational use of medicines in healthcare facilities nationwide.
