The Laboratory Department of Vinmec Times City International General Hospital has been accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for meeting testing standards. This makes it the first and only hospital in Vietnam to achieve both of the world's leading and rigorous quality certifications in healthcare: JCI and CAP.
Globally Recognized Quality
The Laboratory Department at Vinmec Times City has achieved CAP accreditation across all areas of its operations, including Hematology – Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry – Immunology, Microbiology – Molecular Biology, Pathology, and Clinical Laboratory Testing. This certification acknowledges the laboratory’s adherence to stringent international standards and ensures the highest quality in diagnostic testing.
This achievement comes after two years of continuous effort by the laboratory team at Vinmec Times City to enhance its professional processes. The team worked diligently to meet 13 sets of standards with over 1,000 strict requirements. During this period, the laboratory also participated in the CAP External Quality Control Program, which meant that all its activities were under the close supervision of CAP, ensuring that the department met the highest standards of care.
The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is the world’s leading organization in laboratory accreditation. While various countries have their own sets of testing standards, CAP is recognized as the highest and most challenging certification to obtain. Out of the 8,000 laboratories worldwide that are accredited by CAP, more than 95% are located in the United States. Therefore, any laboratory that receives CAP certification, regardless of its location, is globally recognized for its quality patient care and diagnostic expertise.
Dr. Si Nguyen, the head of the CAP accreditation team, praised Vinmec Times City, saying, “Vinmec Times City has one of the best laboratories in the world. The standardization of medical testing is of significant importance, especially when it comes to establishing the foundation for treatment decisions, particularly for complex diseases like cancer. Many patients in Vietnam have opted to go abroad for medical testing to ensure that they receive accurate results from the outset, avoiding the potential for misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment. As a result, the CAP accreditation at Vinmec Times City provides patients—both domestic and international—with the confidence that they will receive reliable, high-quality test results.
Dr. Trương Công Duẩn, the Head of the Laboratory Department at Vinmec Times City, emphasized that the process of building and maintaining a quality management system in line with CAP standards has been a valuable opportunity for the laboratory staff to expand their knowledge, improve their skills, and adopt best practices in laboratory operations. In the long term, CAP certification has strengthened Vinmec Times City’s position in the diagnostic and treatment process. It is especially relevant as the hospital continues to develop Centers of Excellence (COE) in fields such as Cardiology, Oncology, Orthopedics, and Allergy Immunology, all of which follow international standards from the United States, Europe, and Australia.
The "Golden Double" International Certifications
According to medical experts, CAP and JCI are considered the two golden standards for hospital quality in the United States. CAP focuses on laboratory quality management, while JCI provides a broader framework for overall hospital quality management. Together, these two standards ensure that patient care is safe, effective, and of the highest quality.
With this latest achievement, Vinmec Times City is now the first and only hospital in Vietnam to have earned both JCI and CAP certifications, making it a pioneer in healthcare quality in the country. This achievement follows the hospital's initial receipt of the JCI certification seven years ago, further solidifying its position as a leader in healthcare.
