ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify and classify the consultation needs of cancer patients treated at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital according to a prepared questionnaire.
Research subjects and methods: Retrospective study on 105 patients who received radiotherapy at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital from January 2019 to July 2019. Patients were interviewed on the phone about their consultation needs, collected and processed the information obtained, thereby suggesting appropriate consultation methods for each patient group.
Results: After collecting the survey forms, we found out the consulting needs of Radiation Therapy patients as follows:
- Treatment method (radiation therapy technique): 100%.
- Treatment cost: 100%.
- Psychological counseling: 97%.
- Nutritional regimen: 96%.
- Diagnosis: 95%.
- Treatment duration: 94%.
- Administrative procedures: 94%.
- Life expectancy: 90%.
- Care regimen: 86%.
- Impact on surrounding people: 86%.
- Equipment and machinery: 86%.
- Infectiousness: 80%.
- Cancer screening for future generations: 80%.
- Ability to have children: 62%.
- Hereditary ability: 59%.
Conclusion: Cancer patients at the Radiation Therapy Department of Vinmec Times City International General Hospital have a high demand for consultation on disease stage, diagnosis, estimated survival time after treatment, treatment methods, equipment, treatment costs and especially on nutrition during and after treatment. Through direct interviews with patients, I realized that the need for consultation and proper approach to patients by the medical team is very important, directly affecting the patient's psychology.
The medical team needs to be fully equipped with soft skills in pathology consultation as well as the patient’s need for comfort and encouragement. In the study, we further analyzed the factors of age, region of residence, financial capacity, education, and appropriate time for consultation, to be able to analyze and give more realistic suggestions, in order to help the medical team select consultation needs for each patient group. Thereby, ensuring satisfaction and mentality for cancer patients.
