Uses of Serratiopeptidase

Serratiopeptidase 10mg contains serratiopeptidase (also known as serrapeptase), a chemical derived from silkworms. This medication is widely used in Japan and Europe. It falls under the category of prescription drugs and is classified as a proteolytic enzyme with anti-edema properties.

1. What is Serratiopeptidase?

Serratiopeptidase (or Serrapeptase) is an extracellular metalloendopeptidase composed of 470 amino acids with a molecular weight of about 50,000 kilodaltons. The enzyme's active site contains a zinc atom that hydrolyzes peptide bonds in polypeptides. Its maximum proteolytic activity occurs at 40°C (104°F) and a pH of approximately 8 (range 6 to 10). Maintaining a temperature of 55°C (131°F) for 15 minutes will inactivate the enzyme. Serratiopeptidase is produced through fermentation technology, where the enzyme is purified from bacterial cultures.

Mechanism of Action of Serratiopeptidase 10mg:
Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme derived from Serratia spp. It reduces edema and inflammation associated with trauma, chronic venous insufficiency, or infections when taken orally. Serratiopeptidase enhances the absorption of other medications, especially antibiotics, due to its anti-inflammatory properties through enzyme mechanisms.

  • Reduces swelling after trauma or surgery and inhibits inflammation-induced edema.
  • Promotes the penetration of chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics into tissues.
  • Aids in the expulsion and dissolution of phlegm and pus.

2. Indications for Serratiopeptidase 10mg

Serratiopeptidase helps the body break down proteins, thereby reducing inflammation. It is indicated for all inflammatory and edematous conditions:

  • Serratiopeptidase is used for conditions such as back pain, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Conditions often associated with pain and swelling (inflammation).

3. How to Use and Dosage of Serratiopeptidase 10mg

Serratiopeptidase 10mg is formulated as a tablet. Swallow each tablet with water.

Each patient may have a different dosage. The doctor will prescribe the medication based on the patient's medical condition and health status. The following are reference dosages recommended by experts:

  • The usual dosage for adults is 1 tablet 3 times a day (approximately 15 to 60 mg/day) taken 2 hours after meals.
  • Serrapeptase has been used for 1 to 2 weeks as an anti-inflammatory and up to 4 weeks as a mucolytic agent.
  • The dosage may be increased depending on the condition.
  • To reduce swelling inside the cheek after sinus surgery: take 1 Serratiopeptidase 10mg tablet, 3 times before surgery, once in the evening after surgery, and then 3 times/day for 5 days post-surgery.

4. Side Effects of Serratiopeptidase

Discontinue use of Serratiopeptidase 10mg immediately if allergic reactions or skin rashes occur.

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite.
  • Blood: Bleeding (rare).

5. Precautions When Using Serratiopeptidase 10mg

Although there is insufficient clinical data to determine whether Serratiopeptidase is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid its use to prevent potential health risks to the mother and fetus.

Serratiopeptidase may interfere with blood clotting; therefore, some researchers suggest it could exacerbate bleeding disorders. If you have a bleeding disorder, consult your doctor before using Serratiopeptidase.

Serratiopeptidase 10mg can increase bleeding risk during and after surgery. Discontinue use at least 2 weeks before scheduled surgery.
