1. Uses of Cavinton Forte

What is Cavinton Forte?
Cavinton Forte is a psychotropic medication that contains the active ingredient vinpocetine. It has a complex mechanism of action that positively impacts brain metabolism and cerebral blood flow. Vinpocetine protects nerve cells, stimulates brain metabolism, improves cerebral microcirculation and selectively enhances increased cerebral circulation.
Cavinton Forte is indicated for use:

  • Treatment of various forms of cerebral circulatory disorders, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy and hypertensive, post-stroke, vascular dementia, cerebral atherosclerosis, and vertebral degeneration… The drug also alleviates neuropsychiatric symptoms related to cerebrovascular disease.
  • Treatment of chronic capillary disorders affecting the choroid and retina.
  • Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and Ménière's disease.

2. How to use Cavinton Forte:

Cavinton Forte should be taken orally, ideally after meals. It is crucial to follow the doctor's prescribed dosage and schedule. In the absence of a prescription, the typical dosage ranges from 15 - 30 mg/day or 5 - 10 mg 3 times/day. No dosage adjustments are necessary for individuals with liver or kidney disease.

According to healthcare professionals, a daily dose of up to 60 mg of Cavinton Forte is safe. A single oral dose of up to 30 mg of vinpocetine generally does not lead to significant adverse effects on the cardiovascular system or other organs. In case of an emergency, patients should contact their doctor or visit the nearest hospital.

3. Side effects when using Cavinton Forte

When using Cavinton Forte, the patient may experience some side effects. Most side effects are usually mild and go away immediately after taking the drug. Some side effects that patients are at risk of facing include:

  • Uncommon: Dry mouth, nausea, abdominal discomfort, hypotension, headache, feeling hot, dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, excitement, ...;
  • Rare: Hyphema, thrombocytopenia, heart arrhythmia (fast or slow, prolonged QT interval), indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, high blood urea, hypoglycemia, taste disturbances, anorexia, sleep disorders, insomnia, restlessness, agitation, itchy skin, hives, rash, hyperhidrosis, hypertension, ...

When experiencing the above side effects, patients should notify the doctor promptly for examination and treatment.

4. Caution when using Cavinton Forte

Cavinton Forte is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Pregnant women and breastfeeding women
  • Individuals who are hypersensitive to vinpocetine or any of the other ingredients in the medication
  • Those with a history of hereditary galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption (each tablet contains 83 mg lactose).

Caution When Using Cavinton Forte

  • Patients should inform their doctor about any existing medical conditions, particularly heart failure.
  • An electrocardiogram is recommended for patients with prolonged QT interval syndrome or those taking other medications that may prolong the QT interval.
  • Cavinton Forte can cause side effects including dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches, drowsiness, heart arrhythmia, restlessness and agitation. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using this medication in drivers and machine operators.

5. Drug Interactions with Cavinton Forte

Cavinton Forte may interact with other medications, potentially reducing their effectiveness. Notably:

  • There are no significant drug interactions reported when vinpocetine is used with beta-blockers such as cloranolol and pindolol, as well as glibenclamide, clopamide, digoxin, acenocoumarol, or hydrochlorothiazide. However, mild hypotension may occur in rare cases if vinpocetine is taken alongside alpha methyl-dopa, which necessitates regular blood pressure monitoring.
  • Although clinical data suggest no interactions, caution should be exercised when combining vinpocetine with antiarrhythmic drugs, anticoagulants and medications that affect the central nervous system.

Patients using Cavinton Forte should strictly adhere to their doctor's instructions. If you experience side effects or are using other medications, notify your doctor immediately for appropriate support.
