Can I get pregnant if I take the emergency contraceptive pill 10 hours after intercourse?

Question:

Hello, doctor! I had intercourse at 1:00 AM, and then again at 7:00 AM the same day. My boyfriend was not careful and ejaculated inside me. At 7:00 PM the same day, I took one emergency contraceptive pill. I would like to ask, if I take the emergency contraceptive pill 10 hours after intercourse, is there still a chance I could get pregnant? I read that taking this pill can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, headache, and bleeding, but after more than 2 hours of taking the pill, I only feel tired. Could you please advise me? Thank you.

Hello, doctor. My girlfriend and I had intercourse 3 days after her period ended without using a condom, and I ejaculated inside. The next day, my girlfriend took the emergency contraceptive pill. Doctor, could you tell me if there's a chance she could get pregnant? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Dear doctor, I'm 16 years old. I had intercourse but there was no vaginal penetration, and my partner did not ejaculate inside. However, I took emergency contraception 7 hours after the encounter. Is there still a risk of pregnancy? Please give me an advise. Thank you.

Answer

Hello. Emergency contraception should be taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours after unprotected sex, and it's important to take the correct dosage and follow the prescribed timing.
Emergency contraception is over 75% effective in preventing pregnancy. If you took the pill within 6 hours of the encounter, the risk of pregnancy is very low. However, it's not recommended to use this medication frequently as continuous use can reduce its effectiveness and may cause side effects such as dizziness, abdominal pain, and heavy vaginal bleeding or spotting a few days after taking the pill. In your case, since you took the emergency contraceptive 10 hours after the encounter and haven't experienced any of these symptoms, there's no need to worry excessively as these symptoms may or may not occur.
