A new technique "cuts" the hospital stay following cancer surgery in half, to three days

Vinmec Times City International Hospital has accomplished a miracle in colon cancer surgery thanks to the robotic surgery technique and the program to speed up recovery following surgery: Following surgery, patients should eat right away. They should also exercise for six hours and refrain from taking any medications the first day. Three days after surgery, the patient was released from the hospital and allowed to resume his regular activities.

Outstanding cancer surgery with minimal pain

Despite having just had colon cancer surgery 15 days prior, Ms. Nguyen Thi H.T (Hanoi), 59, was quite busy and required multiple appointments before we had the chance to speak with her. She claimed that after three days of hospital surgery, she went home and resumed her regular activities. She not only attends breakfast, drinks coffee, hosts friends, engages in her preferred charitable activities, but she also walks twice daily from her house to Uncle Ho's Mausoleum.

When the doctor first described how to use this novel technique, Ms. T. admitted that she was first concerned as well. However, after her children contacted them to seek advice from eminent French doctors, she was reassured. And miraculously, she did not expect to be able to recover quickly without pain.

Ms. T. claimed she had diabetes and high blood fat, so she had to be cautious about what she ate and drank. She spent a month in Thailand performing an olive oil detox routine both before and after learning she had the condition. She had to travel to Vinmec hospital for emergency treatment after fainting, in part because of disease anxiety and in part because she had been fasting to detox. Her family decided against traveling abroad for surgery after 6 days of getting protein and nutrients to boost health and after consulting with the Department of Oncology, and instead chose to have robotic laparoscopic surgery at Vinmec in conjunction with the ERAS care program.

Mrs. T. expressed her surprise at how light and pleasant she felt after the open colectomy, which was a significant procedure. After surgery, even when family visit, she can speak normally. This hysterectomy was much less painful for her than the one she had 25 years prior. The least harsh is not needing to use IV fluids and antibiotics, experiencing zero discomfort following surgery, and urinating normally. I had a good bowel movement (laughs) and was able to eat, drink, take a shower, and perform physical therapy exercises for four hours per day on the second day. Therefore, pain following surgery without the feeling of exhaustion. She re-examined the incision and snipped the sutures when the surgery had been completed after 8 days.

Five specialties combine care to help patients get better quickly

Mrs. T. went to the emergency hospital because she fainted, collapsed due to lack of substance, and had colon cancer, according to Professor Dr.Nguyen Ngoc Khanh, Head of Department of Gastroenterology - Urology - Robot - Pediatrics Vinmec Times City. Right liver measures 6-7 cm, almost obstructing the intestinal lumen. Robotic surgery was used on the patient in combination with the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program to hasten the patient's recovery and ensure safety, less pain, and less blood loss. The patient was able to leave the hospital after three days and resume normal work activities after ten days.

In order to promote a speedy and early recovery following surgery, the program to optimize recovery after surgery combines perioperative multimodal care regimens (before, during, and after surgery). Pre-operative counseling for patient comfort and trust, shared treatment and care with medical staff, proper nutrition, and anesthetic-reduction regimes are the main components of ERAS, typical discomfort and early mobilization.

Anesthesiology, Nutrition, Rehabilitation, Surgery, and Nursing Care with many employees must coordinate with each other in order to accomplish ERAS. ERAS is so distinct from conventional therapy that it could appear absurd at first!

Patients do not need to fast before surgery for colon cancer or have an enema. Without drainage during surgery, appropriate infusion to prevent water-electrolyte imbalances, morphine-free pain treatment, and only one dose of antibiotics to prevent adverse effects.

Drink water, milk, soft foods, and sit up for two hours after surgery. The first day following surgery, avoid fluids and eat raw foods. Practice walking for six hours. The target date for discharge from the hospital after surgery is day three. In reality, the patient was able to walk unassisted on the second day, and either the day of the surgery or the day after, bowel circulation had returned. When a patient undergoes significant surgery, such as a colectomy, they no longer need to stay in the hospital for 7–10 days with daily antibiotic infusions and drainage but are instead discharged in good condition after 3 days.
