Learn about the antidepressant Laroxyl

Laroxyl is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant. It has the effect of reducing the symptoms of depression, reducing anxiety and agitation. For a comprehensive understanding of Laroxyl, please consult the article below.

1. What is Laroxyl antidepressant?

Laroxyl is an antidepressant containing amitriptyline hydrochloride, equivalent to 25 mg of amitriptyline base.

It exerts an antidepressant effect by rapidly boosting noradrenaline levels and partially increasing serotonin through the inhibition of reuptake in the synaptic cleft. This is deemed to be associated with the antidepressant efficacy of the medication.

Amitriptyline also has another effect which is anticholinergic in both the central and peripheral nervous system.

2. Uses of antidepressant Laroxyl

Laroxyl is only used in the following cases:

  • Treatment of symptoms of depression, especially endogenous depression with psychosis and agitation.
  • Treatment of some cases of nocturnal enuresis in older children.

Note that Laroxyl is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the drug.
  • Do not use at the same time or within 14 days after stopping using antidepressants of the MAO inhibitor group.
  • Acute recovery phase after myocardial infarction or acute congestive heart failure.
  • Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding.
  • Children under 12 years old.

3. Dosage and administration of Laroxyl

The medication is formulated as a tablet and administered orally. The prescribed dosage of the medication is as follows:

  • Adults: typically administered at a dosage of 75mg per day, divided into 2-3 doses, with gradual increase not beyond 25mg at each stage. The maximum dosage is 150 mg per day.
  • The maintenance dose must be determined and modified based on each patient's reaction.

4. Is Laroxyl antidepressant good?

In the past, tricyclic antidepressants were often used in the treatment of depression. Although they are very effective in treating the disease, these medications are now rarely used because of the risk of overdose and toxicity and they have more side effects than other antidepressants.

The common side effects of tricyclic antidepressants are due to muscarinic inhibition, histamine blocking, and alpha-1 adrenolytic activities. Many of these drugs have anticholinergic properties so they are not suitable for the elderly, patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, or chronic constipation. This medication also lowers the seizures threshold.

Some side effects that may occur when using Laroxyl:

  • Dizziness, weakness, headache, tinnitus, appearance of extrapyramidal symptoms.
  • Fatigue, agitated, mild euphoria during drug use.
  • May cause either low blood pressure or high blood pressure, increased heart rate, palpitations, fainting.
  • Digestive disorders may also occur.

Despite its potential for several side effects, Laroxyl is utilized effectively in treatment. The choice of drug or not depends on the symptoms that the patient experiences, the severity of the disease and response to other medications.

5. Some things to note when using Laroxyl

The drug should only be taken under the instruction of a doctor, and you should tell your doctor about any allergic reactions you have before taking it. Other diseases that should be taken with precaution are:
