Have you ever thought that one day you went for a routine health check-up but received a notice that your body had breast cancer cells growing. How do you receive that information, how do you face it and do you think you have enough strength to defeat breast cancer? Those seemingly impossible things appeared in the true story of Ms. Kim Oanh, a patient diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. Let's follow her miraculous journey in fighting this terrible disease.
Video content is professionally consulted by PhD.MD. Nguyen Thu Huong, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital.
1. Having breast cancer despite regular cancer screening
Ms. Kieu Oanh is a woman who is very conscious about taking care of and protecting her health, maintaining exercise, and having a very scientific diet. Every year she performs breast cancer screening. However, during her recent health check, she was informed by doctors that she had breast cancer.
During the health check, doctors discovered a malignant microcalcification area in the left breast, only 1-3mm. When noticing abnormalities, the doctor decided to perform a biopsy under X-ray guidance to be able to remove the suspected microcalcifications for pathological examination. In case of not having a biopsy early for diagnosis, the early diagnosis stage of the disease may be missed and the disease may progress, even metastasize.
Ms. Oanh also has another problem: she has 2 breast implants, because the microcalcifications are very small and lie close to the breast implant, only a few millimeters away. If a biopsy needle is inserted under X-ray guidance, it is very likely to damage the breast implant. A safer case is to remove the breast implant, then remove the microcalcifications, but this will delay Ms. Kieu Oanh's diagnosis and she has to undergo another surgery to remove the breast implant.
Preserving the breast implant and getting the biopsy of calcification is one of the difficult decisions of the medical team. PhD. MD. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong - Director of the Breast Center - Vinmec Time City Hospital said.
The biopsy process was successful, the doctor accurately and completely removed the tissue containing microcalcifications and the pathological result was ductal carcinoma in situ. In addition, Ms. Kieu Oanh's case was re-tested to re-evaluate the entire profile to see if there were any other problems to provide her information to the multi-modality council, which is the council consisting of many doctors working on cancer at Vinmec Hospital. These are doctors specializing in breast cancer, oncology, pathology, surgery, and diagnosis. The doctors discussed her case together and agreed that the early stage will have a good prognosis.
The doctor gave her a conservative surgical treatment method so that her safety is ensured, removed all cancer cells in her breast and did not have to remove the breast implant.
2. Early detection of breast cancer brings the opportunity for successful treatment.
When consulting with experts at the Breast Center, the doctor performed surgery on the patient, the tumor was located under the guidance of a wire needle and during the surgery, the doctor determined that the lesions were very close to the surface of the three fibrous breast implants. However, fortunately, the doctor removed the entire lesion without affecting the breast implant. The initial surgery was successful, however, the lucky factor was that the disease was detected and diagnosed at a very early stage. If it had been detected later and the lesions were larger, the possibility of invasion and the surgery would have been very difficult.
According to Associate Professor, MD. YI HYEON GYU - Oncologist at Vinmec Time City Hospital, many customers are often diagnosed with breast cancer at a late stage and at that time, the doctor is forced to choose treatment with more severe and intense chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Currently, Ms. Oanh is a lucky case because she was detected at an early stage thanks to regular breast cancer screening, so doctors can detect the disease at a very early stage to promptly treat it with surgery and minimal radiation therapy. Currently, the client's next treatment plan is endocrine medicine. Endocrine treatment is quite simple and causes few side effects, I hope the patient can easily adapt to the medication. If the patient has reached a late stage and has to receive chemotherapy, the side effects will be more severe than endocrine treatment. Endocrine therapy is a simple measure to prevent the risk of recurrence.
Currently, her surgery was successful, only 2 days after surgery, she was able to go home to prepare for her treatment. Currently, Ms. Kieu Oanh's treatment is very simple, it can be completed within 2 weeks, the radiation doses are also minimal and have almost no side effects.
Currently, breast cancer can occur at any age, to anyone, and is a dangerous disease. Therefore, to reduce the risk of disease, screening plays an extremely important role.
Currently, Vinmec International General Hospital has developed breast cancer screening services for all ages. To improve the quality of medical services, the hospital has equipped the Invenia TM ABUS system, a modern 3D ultrasound system, the only machine recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration to support screening and detection of breast cancer for patients with dense breast tissue.
Unlike some ultrasound machines that use 3D probes in breast examination, the Invenia TM ABUS machine is a specialized device for 3D breast ultrasound examination. With high-resolution images, the breast area can detect very small lesions that 2D ultrasound can miss. Therefore, women can be completely assured of the modern equipment system, highly specialized team of doctors, professional service, and reasonable prices when coming to Vinmec.
