First total laparoscopic hysterectomy at Vinmec Phu Quoc

Over the past 2 years, Ms. Tran Kim C. (43 years old from Duong Dong town, Phu Quoc island) had suffered from hypermenorrhea and dysmenorrhea caused by uterine fibroids and endometriosis. Long-lasting and heavy blood loss made it difficult for her to even walk or do light tasks. As the COVID-19 epidemic made it even more difficult to visit distant hospitals, Ms. C. decided to go to Vinmec Phu Quoc Hospital for treatment and was extremely satisfied with the results.

Ms. C. said that she was always tired and seemingly any activity, even small personal hygiene ones, made her feel tired and exhausted, as seen in her Pale skin and blurred eye mucosa. After consulting, doctors at Vinmec Phu Quoc decided to perform a total laparoscopic hysterectomy to treat her condition thoroughly. Before the surgery, the doctors transfused 2 units of red blood cells, which are equivalent to 700ml of blood, and made the best preparation possible for the surgical instruments considering the fact that there is still limitation on the island when it comes to medical devices and equipment.

This is the first time that Vinmec has successfully performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy. The operation had close coordination between the specialties of surgery, internal medicine, and obstetrics, to bring the best possible results to the patient. The operation team with doctor Phan Phi Tuan (Head of Surgery Department) and 2 obstetricians named Huynh Vu Khanh Linh and Nguyen Thi Hong On carried out the surgery smoothly and achieved good results.

After surgery, the patient recovered well, experienced less pain, and was able to walk soon after. After receiving care for 4 additional days post-surgery with a focus on dealing with previous anemia, the patient was discharged with much better health than before with a small incision that only caused minor pain.

After 1 week, the HgB index - one of the three indicators used to diagnose anemia, increased from 6.2 millimole / l to 9.1 millimole / l, which is close to the normal level. Currently, Ms. C. is able to live normally. She now can walk and do light tasks. Feeling healthy with an improved quality of life, Ms. C. and her family are very much satisfied as they can receive safe treatment right on the island without having to travel to big cities far away.

Vinmec Phu Quoc Hospital is developing many new laparoscopic techniques in gynecology (such as hysterectomy, ovarian cyst removal, removal of ectopic pregnancy), extra-digestive surgery (cholecystectomy, appendectomy, intestinal perforation suture, gastric bypass), urology (retrograde ureteral lithotripsy, extraperitoneal endoscopic removal of ureteral stones), among others, to provide better health care for both the locals and tourists on Phu Quoc island.
