Causes of itchy palms

The itching of the hands is undoubtedly uncomfortable. Itching in the palms at night can be extremely irritating if it does not go away. However, palm itching is rarely a major concern and may indicate a chronic skin condition that requires regular treatment. Below are some common causes of itchy palms.

1. What causes itching in the palms?

Itching in the palms can be caused by various factors such as:

  • Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis): This is a common condition where the skin becomes inflamed. There are different types of eczema, and symptoms can range from severe blisters to mild itching and dry, cracked skin. Some forms of eczema, such as atopic dermatitis, may manifest as red, cracked, and scaly skin or small, itchy, fluid-filled blisters on the palms, sides of the fingers, toes, and soles of the feet. This type of eczema is often triggered by seasonal allergies or stress, and the blisters may last for weeks.
  • Psoriasis: Itching in the palms or soles of the feet is also a common symptom of psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks skin cells, causing them to multiply excessively. It is believed to be genetic, but it can also be triggered by factors such as stress, cold weather, hormones, or infections like staphylococcus or strep throat. Certain medications, like lithium and beta-blockers, are also associated with psoriasis flare-ups. Psoriasis can appear on the hands and feet as small white blisters and red patches. This condition is more common in women and may recur multiple times over months or even years. Arthritis is also a potential side effect.
  • Dry skin: During the winter, the outdoor air's humidity drops significantly, which can lead to dry, cracked, bleeding, and itchy skin.
  • Allergies: Often, itching in the palms and hands is a sign of an allergic reaction to something you've come into contact with. Symptoms may appear immediately or even hours later and can include rashes, extremely dry skin, hives, blisters, or a sensation of heat or tingling. Doctors may prescribe antihistamines or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and itching caused by an allergic reaction. Eczema caused by nickel, cobalt, or other metals, commonly found in jewelry and other items, can also result from allergies. An allergist may perform a skin prick test to identify which metals you're allergic to.
  • Diabetes: Itchy hands can also be an early sign of diabetes, a serious condition where the body doesn't respond normally to insulin. Eruptive xanthomatosis (benign skin lesions that result from high levels of triglycerides in the blood), a skin condition related to diabetes, often causes itching in the hands and feet. Other symptoms include small, swollen, yellowish bumps surrounded by redness. Typically, when diabetes is managed properly, the skin condition improves as well.
  • Medications or cancer treatments: Itching can be a side effect of certain medications, such as aspirin, opioids, and some blood pressure drugs. It can also be an unwanted effect of cancer treatment therapies.

2. How to treat itching in the palms?

The treatment depends on the underlying cause of the palm itching:

  • Dry skin: Applying a moisturizer can help soothe the itch. Look for products with ingredients like glycerin, lactic acid, urea, or other moisturizers that reduce water loss, such as ointments. Choose a fragrance-free option, as heavily scented creams can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Allergies: Treat the allergic reaction with antihistamines or allergy medications.
  • Eczema and psoriasis: Both conditions can be mild enough to treat itchy palms with over-the-counter creams or steroid ointments. These medications can slow down or stop the processes in the body that cause these conditions.
  • Diabetes: Early diagnosis of diabetes or issues related to blood sugar can help reduce symptoms and side effects. Once diabetes is diagnosed, symptoms may improve if blood sugar levels are properly managed.
