Artrodar: Uses, dosage and side effects

Diacerein is a new medication in the anti-inflammatory drug class, prescribed to treat symptoms in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, with a slow-acting effect.

1. Components and uses of Artrodar:

• Artrodar contains the active ingredient diacerein, which belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic drugs.
• The medication is formulated as Artrodar capsules with a dosage of 50mg.

2. Dosage and usage of Artrodar:

Recommended dosage is as follows:

• Adults: Because the medication may cause loose stools or diarrhea, it is recommended to start diacerein treatment with a dose of 50mg/day (equivalent to 1 capsule/day), taken with dinner during the first 2-4 weeks.
• Then, the dose can be increased to 50mg twice a day, taken with meals (1 capsule with breakfast, 1 capsule with dinner).
• The medication should be taken as a whole capsule (do not open the capsule) with a glass of water.

The medication has a slow onset of action, and its beneficial effects are observed after the first 2-4 weeks, therefore, doctors may prescribe additional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or other pain relievers.

3. Some cases where the medication should not be used and precautions when using it:

Do not use the medication for the following individuals:

• Patients who are hypersensitive to any components of the medication.
• Patients with liver diseases or a history of liver diseases.
• History of severe diarrhea, dehydration, hypokalemia requiring hospitalization.

Use caution when administering the medication to the following individuals:

• Patients with a history of intestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome, should consider the benefits and risks when using the medication.
• Reduce the dosage for patients with renal impairment.
• Not recommended for use in patients over 65 years old.
• Due to the lack of studies on individuals under 15 years old, it is not prescribed for children in this age group.
• Patients using diuretics due to an increased risk of dehydration and hypokalemia.
• Patients using cardiac glycosides (digoxin, digitoxin) due to an increased risk of arrhythmia.
• Patients using laxatives.
• Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use the medication.

4. Side effects of Artrodar:

• Very common: Diarrhea, abdominal pain. May also experience bloating and increased bowel movements.
• These effects are commonly observed during the first few days of treatment and may decrease with continued use of the medication.
• In some cases, severe diarrhea with complications of dehydration and electrolyte disturbances requires stopping the medication and immediately informing a doctor.
• Other side effects: Elevated liver enzymes, itching, skin rash, eczema, dark yellow urine.
