Vinmec Tissue Bank Becomes the First Private Tissue Bank licensed to operate by the Ministry of Health

On November 24, 2019, Vinmec Biobank had the honor of hosting the evaluation team from the Ministry of Health, chaired by Professor, Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Services Administration. The team conducted a comprehensive assessment of Vinmec Tissue Bank’s operations.

1. Overview

A tissue bank is a specialized medical facility responsible for receiving, processing, preserving, and supplying tissues to hospitals, research centers, or medical training institutions.
Stored tissues consist of cells or parts of organs that perform specific biological functions. These tissues are collected and preserved for therapeutic purposes, such as replacing damaged or weakened tissues in the body.
In principle, any human tissue can be collected and stored for research or application. However, the most commonly stored tissues include stem cells from cord blood, bone marrow, peripheral blood, and umbilical cord tissue; corneal and skin tissues; bone, cartilage, and joints; heart valves, membranes, and tendons; and dura mater from deceased donors.
Furthermore, tissue banks play a role in international collaboration by exchanging tissues, thereby contributing to improved medical services. According to Vietnamese law, all tissue bank activities must be licensed and closely supervised by the Ministry of Health (as per Article 35 of the 2006 Law on Donation, Collection, Transplantation of Tissues, Organs, and Cadavers).
