Purpose and Reason for Organizing the Program
In clinical practice, solid renal masses are often discovered incidentally. Many of these masses are renal cell carcinomas (RCC). Imaging plays a crucial role in differentiating these RCCs from benign conditions, although in many cases, this may not be feasible.
Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), based on various anatomical and functional parameters, plays an important role in detecting and evaluating the characteristics of solid renal masses.
Image of mpMRI can differentiate benign masses from certain subtypes of RCC, potentially suggesting the histological grade of the tumor and playing a crucial role in ensuring appropriate patient management to avoid unnecessary surgeries or other interventions. It is also a useful non-invasive imaging tool for monitoring renal tumor patients before and after treatment.
The purpose of this report is to review the MRI characteristics of RCC and commonly encountered benign renal masses.
Program Objectives
- Understand common solid renal masses, MRI indications in evaluating renal masses, and multiparametric MRI protocols for renal mass assessment.
- Recognize imaging characteristics of common renal masses such as RCC, AML, and Oncocytoma.
- Approach differential diagnosis of solid renal masses using MRI.
