The transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) technique—also known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement—is one of the most complex interventional cardiology techniques in the world currently. It is indicated for patients with severe aortic valve stenosis, especially in difficult cases where surgery is not an option due to advanced age, frailty, or accompanying chronic conditions. Vinmec is the first hospital in Vietnam to independently perform this technique, achieving a success rate of over 98% in TAVI interventions.
To enhance specialized knowledge and expertise in this field, in February 2019, interventional cardiologists from Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital participated in a training program at Wesley Hospital, QLD Brisbane, Australia.
Participating Doctors:
Professor MD.PhD. Võ Thành Nhân: Director of the Cardiology Center, Interventional Cardiologist, Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital.
Master Dr. Lã Thị Thùy: Interventional Cardiologist, Cardiology Center, Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital.
Trainer: Dr. Anthony Camuglia: Interventional Cardiology Specialist and Senior Medical Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
Training content:
- Methods of performing the transcatheter aortic valve implantation technique.
- Hands-on practice with TAVI procedures guided by experts through real clinical cases.
Post-Training Application:
- Conducting a Workshop on Structural Heart Disease at Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital. During the workshop, training sessions were conducted for guest doctors on managing structural heart diseases.
- Two cases of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) were successfully performed on patients with severe aortic stenosis.
- Proctor Certification Achievement: On July 18, 2019, Professor Võ Thành Nhân became the first Vietnamese doctor to be awarded the Proctor certification by this association. This certification enables him to train, directly guide, and support other cardiac centers or hospitals in performing the TAVI technique. In Southeast Asia, Proctor-certified TAVI experts are rare, with an average of only 1-2 individuals per country. Specifically, Singapore and the Philippines each have two certified specialists, while Thailand and Vietnam have one each.
