Vinmec organizes a specialized training session on the topic: "New Advances in Minimally Invasive Treatment of Malignant Thyroid Lesions"

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer among endocrine gland cancers. According to statistics from the World Cancer Organization, over 500,000 new cases of thyroid cancer were reported in 2020 alone. Despite this, the prognosis for thyroid cancer treatment is very good, with over 98% of successfully treated patients surviving for more than 5 years.

The sudden increase in thyroid cancer cases in recent years, while the mortality rate has not increased, is due to the development of diagnostic techniques. These advancements help diagnose thyroid cancer tumors at an earlier stage, significantly reducing the treatment process for thyroid cancer without changing the effectiveness of the treatment.

However, the question arises whether we have done "enough" to treat such lesions. Is there a method that minimizes invasiveness while still achieving the desired treatment effectiveness?

To answer this question, on April 24, 2023, the Thyroid Pathology Center at Vinmec Times City Hospital organized the training session "New Advances in Minimally Invasive Treatment of Malignant Thyroid Lesions." The session featured Prof. Jung Hwan Baek, currently working at ASAN Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, who is the pioneer of using radiofrequency ablation to treat benign and malignant thyroid nodules. The training session attracted significant interest and participation from over 200 experts and healthcare professionals from various medical facilities nationwide.

During the training, experts and guests presented many important reports with practical significance in treating malignant thyroid tumors using radiofrequency ablation (RFA). A highlight was the groundbreaking lecture: "Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Thyroid Lesions Using Radiofrequency Ablation" by Prof. Jung Hwan Baek. In this lecture, Prof. Jung Hwan Baek outlined key points in diagnosing and treating recurrent thyroid cancer lesions using RFA, specifically including: Imaging characteristics of recurrent lesions on ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scans and the role of thyroid CT scans in diagnosing recurrent lesions. Techniques in RFA for recurrent thyroid cancer lesions.

Additionally, Prof. Baek shared experiences and effectiveness in treating recurrent lesions in difficult-to-operate locations. His presentations provided many new and promising perspectives for the experts and doctors attending the training.

In addition to Prof. Baek's innovative lecture, Specialist level 2 doctor Lê Thị My shared insights on "Experience with Radiofrequency Ablation for Thyroid Cancer Patients." This helped the doctors attending the training gain a deeper understanding of the experiences in applying radiofrequency ablation to treat thyroid cancer. These experiences were drawn from treating hundreds of cases at Vinmec Times City Hospital, a leading unit in the country in applying minimally invasive methods to treat thyroid cancer.

During the training program, MSc. Dr. Nguyễn Văn Bằng from Family Medical Center Da Nang shared the topic "Complications of Local Anesthetic Toxicity - A Rare Complication in Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation." Dr. Bằng's presentation provided comprehensive knowledge and precautions about local anesthetic toxicity and its management. This rare complication can have serious consequences for patients, even affecting their lives if not managed promptly.

Concluding the training program, MSc. Dr. Phạm Vũ Hiệp (Thyroid Pathology Center – Vinmec Times City Hospital) reported and sought consultation on four challenging clinical cases of recurrent thyroid cancer in diagnosis and treatment. These patients were directly diagnosed and treated at the Thyroid Pathology Center at Vinmec Times City Hospital. This helped the doctors attending the training gain a complete and comprehensive view of recurrent thyroid cancer lesions.

In addition to the presentations, the lively discussions from experts and doctors participating both in person and online cannot be overlooked. Prof. Jung Hwan Baek and Specialist level 2 doctor Lê Thị My thoroughly answered the participants' questions, providing a comprehensive perspective on using minimally invasive interventions in treating malignant thyroid lesions, specifically radiofrequency ablation.

The training session concluded with a wealth of valuable knowledge and experience shared by the experts. This provided the participants with new and promising insights into applying radiofrequency ablation to treat thyroid cancer.

Soon, Vinmec Times City Hospital will continue to implement minimally invasive methods to treat thyroid cancer and will collaborate with centers worldwide, hoping to be more widely applied in Vietnam. This aims to improve the quality of life and treatment outcomes for thyroid cancer patients.
