Uses of Podophyllin

Podophyllin 25% is a liquid medication commonly used to treat early-stage warts, genital warts, small warts, and skin tags. Is Podophyllin good and how to use Podophyllin?

1. What is Podophyllin?

Podophyllin 25% is a liquid medication commonly used to treat early-stage genital warts, regular genital warts, small warts, and skin tags. It is imported directly from Thailand, and distributed through authorized agents. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women or children, as it may cause serious systemic adverse effects. It should only be used with a doctor’s prescription.

2. Ingredients of Podophyllin

Podophyllin for external use is a liquid, not an acid. The medication contains 11.5% Podophyllum resin solution (in a double tincture of 10% Benzoin and 70.5% Ethanol); 25% (in a double tincture Benzoin Ethanol).

3. Indications of Podophyllin

4. Contraindications of Podophyllin

Podophyllin is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • It should not be used to treat warts on mucous membranes which include warts in the urethra, anus, rectum, vagina, and cervix. It is only approved for external use on the genitals.

5. Is Podophyllin good?

Podophyllin is an effective treatment for benign epithelial tumors such as warts, fibroids, papillomas, genital warts, and external and perianal condylomata. This medication is easy to use and considered safe. After application, the warts will begin to shrink and eventually fall off. For genital warts, which can be challenging to treat, Podophyllin primarily has a local effect; it prevents the progression of the warts rather than eliminating the HPV virus from the body.

6. Instructions for using Podophyllin

Dosage: Apply the medicine every 2 days. For those with anal warts, apply every 3 days (3 times a week).
Instruction for use:

  • Step 1: Clean and dry the skin affected by acne and papillomas. Then, apply either 1% tetracycline ointment or vaseline (petroleum jelly) around the healthy skin to disinfect and protect it from Podophyllin. This step helps prevent an overdose, which can cause pain and burning.
  • Step 2: Apply the Podophyllin solution directly to the wart and wait for 30 to 60 seconds until the medicine dries completely. Be careful not to apply the solution too thickly or to spread it onto healthy skin.
  • Step 3: After about 3 hours (or up to 4 hours for thicker areas of skin), wash the area with saline solution or a feminine hygiene solution (for women). Gently pat the skin dry afterward.

7. Notes on using Podophyllin

  • Podophyllin resin can lead to serious side effects throughout the body, so it should only be used under the close supervision of a physician.
  • This medication causes significant irritation to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, requiring very careful application.
  • Podophyllin should not be used in pregnant women, as it may result in birth defects or stillbirth. Additionally, it is not safe for young children, as it can cause severe irritation.

When treating patients, it is crucial to follow each step of the instructions carefully. So not increase the dose of the medication on your own. If you experience any uncomfortable symptoms, consider reducing the dose. In case of an overdose, stop using the medication immediately, clean the area thoroughly to prevent infection, and keep the skin cool.
