Regenerating Heartbeat for 77-Year-Old Patient Using Tavi Technique at Vinmec Central Park

“Before receiving treatment, I was exhausted and extremely ill before getting treatment. I am extremely appreciative of Professor Vo Thanh Nhan.”

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, 77 years old, has spent many years facing a series of dangerous diseases such as stage III heart failure, severe aortic valve degeneration, coronary artery disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and a history of thrombosis at the heart end.

These illnesses have seriously damaged her health, and her family has taken her to many places for treatment in the hope of finding a way to save her increasingly weak heart.

Due to the complexity of her underlying medical conditions and her advanced age, Mrs. Hai is unable to undergo traditional open-heart surgery. The family hopes to choose the TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) method to reduce the risk of complications and mortality from surgery.

However, foreign hospitals and experts refused her because she had a blood clot in her heart in the left ventricle, which was contraindicated in TAVI intervention due to the high risk of complications, which could lead to an accident right on the operating table.

The difficulty in Mrs. Hai's case lies not only in the severe aortic valve stenosis but also in the twisted and calcified aorta. Her heart is very weak, and with multiple complex underlying conditions, if treated conservatively, the mortality rate could reach 50% within two years.

Not giving up hope, the family went to Vinmec to meet with Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan in the hope of finding a better solution.

After examination and consultation with the multidisciplinary "Heart Team", Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan and doctors at Vinmec Central Park came up with the optimal treatment plan for Ms. Hai.

Initially, she was treated with a coronary stent to address her coronary artery disease and anticoagulant medication to manage the blood clot. Once her condition stabilized, the doctors decided to proceed with the TAVI procedure.

This decision was made with careful preparation from modern equipment to a team of experienced experts, with Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan being the first person to receive TAVI certification in Vietnam and having a lot of experience in TAVI intervention with a success rate at the end of the procedure reaching 95.6%.

Instead of having to endure painful open-chest surgery, Ms. Hai only needed to have her groin anesthetized and the valve implanted through a catheter.

The procedure lasted 4 hours with many complicated interventional instruments but was ultimately successful. After only 4 hours, Ms. Hai was able to walk on her own, and after 5 days, she was safely discharged from the hospital.

Her health recovered quickly, and she was able to perform daily activities and take care of herself. Her quality of life improved significantly, and her spirit became much more optimistic after overcoming the pain caused by her illness.
