The team of experts and doctors at the Cardiology Center, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital, has once again demonstrated their professional competence and flexible handling of complex cases. Recently, under the leadership of Dr. Đặng Quang Huy, the cardiology team at Vinmec Times City successfully performed surgery on patient Cù Huy Điệp (64 years old), who was diagnosed with a large aortic dissection and aneurysm at the root and Valsalva sinus. Previously, the patient had undergone two major interventions and surgeries due to acute progressive aortic dissection, including stent graft placement in the descending thoracic aorta and replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic arch.
Upon admission to Vinmec in August, the patient's aortic root was found to have continued to dissect and enlarge, posing a high risk of rupture and death if not operated on promptly.
“Challenging” the brain for over 9 hours, with a highly complex medical history
With a history of hypertension for many years, after stent graft placement in November 2022 and surgery to replace the entire aortic arch and segment, the patient continued treatment as prescribed. However, recently, the patient experienced dull chest pain and exertional chest pain; an echocardiogram at Vinmec revealed progressive dissection and enlargement of the aortic root to nearly 60mm (compared to about 30mm in a normal person).

After monitoring for a month, doctors at Vinmec noted that the patient's aortic root was rapidly enlarging, indicating a high risk of aortic rupture and death if not operated on promptly. After consultation, the patient was scheduled for surgery to replace the aortic root and valve, and reimplant the coronary arteries (also known as Bentall surgery). The total surgery time was up to 9 hours.
Complex Anatomy with Many Risks - Vinmec Times City Surgical Team Achieves Another Milestone
Due to the particularly complex anatomy, with the heart and aorta adhering significantly from previous surgery, the operation required a highly skilled and experienced surgical team with absolute precision. The team needed to carefully separate the adhesions of the heart and the enlarged aortic root before performing the replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve.
Thanks to a meticulously planned surgical strategy, anticipating potential risks, the surgery was successfully completed. Vinmec Times City is equipped with modern facilities, providing maximum support to doctors during surgery and throughout the patient's postoperative recovery. With the collaboration of a professional anesthesia and pain management team, the patient has recovered well and was discharged just one week after surgery.

The Cardiology Center at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital continues to demonstrate its expertise in handling complex extracardiac cases. They routinely apply the ESP (Erector Spinae Plane) block technique to help patients manage pain and avoid postoperative complications. Notably, after leaving the ICU, patients are closely monitored in the HDU (High Dependency Unit) at Vinmec Times City, receiving high-level care and treatment before being transferred to the regular inpatient unit.
