Question:
Hello Doctor,
I am 27 years old, and during a health check, my blood pressure was measured at 140/80. The nurse advised me to see a cardiologist. Could you please let me know if a blood pressure reading of 140/80 is concerning? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello,
Regarding the question, “Is a blood pressure reading of 140/80 concerning?”, the doctor provides the following response:
Hypertension is very rare in young individuals like yourself. Normal blood pressure can fluctuate depending on physical activity levels or emotional states (e.g., anger, nervousness in front of a crowd, stress). For example, under normal conditions, blood pressure may be 120/70 mmHg, but during nervousness, stress, or after running, it can rise to 150–160/90 mmHg. After resting for about 15–30 minutes or calming down, the blood pressure usually returns to normal at 120/70 mmHg. This is a normal physiological response of the body.
Therefore, your blood pressure reading of 140/80 mmHg may fall into this category, and this level of blood pressure is not yet dangerous. To diagnose hypertension, blood pressure can be monitored at home or you can visit a cardiology clinic for examination and consultation.
At-home blood pressure thresholds to consider are 130/85 mmHg. If there are at least two different measurements above this threshold, you should consult a cardiologist. During the consultation, the doctor may measure your blood pressure, perform a 24-hour blood pressure holter monitoring, and order some blood tests and imaging studies to assess whether hypertension has affected other organs such as the heart, kidneys, or eyes.
If you have further concerns about the 140/80 blood pressure reading, you can visit a hospital in the Vinmec Healthcare System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
Best regards!
