Question
Dear Doctor,
I have been diagnosed with Reflux esophagitis grade A - gastritis with bile reflux. Could you please tell me if reflux esophagitis grade A can be completely cured? Is there a high risk of recurrence? Thank you.

Answered by Le Nguyen Hong Tram Specialist Doctor I - Department of Examination and Internal Medicine, Vinmec Nha Trang International General Hospital.
Dear patient,
Regarding your question "Can reflux esophagitis grade A be completely cured?", I would like to answer as follows:
Reflux esophagitis is a condition in which stomach acid and bile reflux from the stomach into the esophagus. If reflux occurs more than 2 times per week, it is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
GERD Grade A is the initial stage, the esophageal mucosa has signs of damage but the degree of erosion and inflammation is still mild. During endoscopy, the image shows an erosion on the esophageal mucosa with a length of less than 5mm. GERD Grade A should not be too worried because at this stage, the inflammation is only mild, if detected early, the disease can be completely cured. However, if the patient is subjective and not serious in the treatment process, the disease will progress very quickly. When the disease manifests at a severe level, treatment will be more difficult, and dangerous complications may arise: esophageal ulcers, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer...
At level A, medical treatment can be fully effective if GERD patients adhere to treatment.
- Regularly visit for check-ups to accurately determine the stage of the disease and have timely treatment;
- Do not take medications without a doctor's prescription because the side effects of the drugs can adversely affect the stomach and esophagus;
- Maintain a relaxed, happy, and optimistic mood every day, eliminate stress;
- Change your diet by using foods that are good for the stomach such as yogurt, green vegetables, fruits, grains, white meat,... At the same time, it is necessary to limit the consumption of foods such as fast food, spicy food, sour food, food with a lot of spices or a lot of fat,...;
- Eliminate bad habits in life such as: Eating too fast, not chewing thoroughly, eating too much, eating while lying down, little exercise,...;
- Maintain a stable weight, do not be overweight or obese. Live a regular life, do not stay up late, get enough sleep, and take a reasonable rest;
- Increase physical activity with moderate exercises such as yoga, walking, cycling, swimming,...;
- Change your sleeping position to reduce symptoms of the disease.
