What is Spasmomen?

Spasmomen contains 40mg of Otilonium bromide, a synthetic anticholinergic agent. It is effective in relieving smooth muscle spasms.

1. What is Spasmomen?

Spasmomen has the main active ingredient Otilonium bromide, in addition to excipients such as Lactose, Starch, Sodium starch glycolate, Magnesium stearate, Hypromellose, Titanium dioxide, Macrogol, and Talc.

Otilonium is a synthetic anticholinergic compound, specifically a quaternary ammonium compound. Therefore, Spasmomen is highly effective in relieving smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract.

Pharmacodynamic studies have indicated that after oral administration, the absorption of the active substance in Spasmomen is very low. Most of the absorbed Otilonium is metabolized and excreted via bile.

2. What are the effects of Spasmomen 40mg?

Spasmomen is indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) due to its ability to inhibit smooth muscle spasms via Otilonium. Moreover, it is often prescribed to manage and prevent the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea;
  • Recurrent abdominal pain;
  • Renal colic;
  • Excessive acid secretion;
  • Excessive salivation;
  • Uncontrolled urine leakage.

Beyond its approved indications, Spasmomen may be utilized for a variety of off-label purposes.

On the other hand, Spasmomen 40mg is absolutely contraindicated for cases of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient Otilonium or any other excipients. Spasmomen is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • People with glaucoma;
  • Jaundice;
  • Pyloric stenosis ;
  • Obstructive cystitis;
  • Benign prostate hypertrophy ;
  • Pregnant and lactating women.

  • In humans, Spasmomen has also not shown any particular effects when taken in overdose;
  • In case of accidental overdose, patients may need symptomatic or supportive treatment.

4. Important considerations when using Spasmomen

Patients who have previously experiencedv an intolerance to some sugars in the past, the patient should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking Spasmomen 40mg (because the excipients include some sugars).

When treating with Spasmomen, patients should pay attention to the following issues to avoid improper use of the drug causing serious health effects:

  • Spasmomen can interact with other medications, potentially reducing their effectiveness and increasing the risk of adverse reactions. Patients should consult with their healthcare provider before taking Spasmomen with any other drugs.
  • Spasmomen can also interact with alcohol and certain other foods. Therefore, patients absolutely do not use drugs with alcohol;
  • Spasmomen may induce drowsiness, headache, and hypotension. Consequently, it is not recommended for individuals engaged in activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery.
  • While animal studies have indicated that Spasmomen does not pose a teratogenic or mutagenic risk, pregnant or breastfeeding women should generally avoid using this medication. In case of mandatory use, close medical supervision is recommended.
  • To maximize efficacy and minimize treatment duration, patients should not stop taking Spasmomen when symptoms tend to be relieved. Additionally, patients should strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage of Spasmomen 40mg. Exceeding the recommended dose does not expedite symptom relief and may increase the risk of dangerous side effects;
  • Do not share Spasmomen with others or give this medication to others, even if their symptoms seem similar.

5. Side effects of Spasmomen

Clinical trials have demonstrated that the incidence of adverse events associated with Spasmomen was not significantly greater than that observed with placebo. Moreover, most side effects were mild and non-specific, similar to those reported with placebo.

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as mild and transient nausea;
