1. What is Methycobal 500mg Used For?
Methycobal 500mg is a preparation containing Mecobalamin, a coenzyme form of vitamin B12 found in cerebrospinal fluid and blood. Mecobalamin is better transported into nerve tissues compared to other vitamin B12 analogs. It promotes the metabolism of nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins through methyl group transfer activity, making Methycobal 500mg particularly effective in treating peripheral neuropathy.
Methycobal 500mg is used to treat, control, and prevent the following conditions:
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency
- Vitamin B12 deficiency leading to megaloblastic anemia
- Pernicious anemia and other forms of megaloblastic anemia
Currently, Methycobal is available in tablet form with 500mcg Mecobalamin or as an injectable solution with 500μg/1ml.
2. How to Use Methycobal 500mg
The dosage of Methycobal should be adjusted according to the patient's age and the severity of symptoms. Below are suggested dosages for reference:
Treatment for adults with peripheral neuropathy:
- Oral form: Take 1 tablet 3 times a day (total dose 1500 mcg Mecobalamin)
- Injectable form: Use 1 ampoule (500mcg Mecobalamin) for intramuscular or intravenous injection, 3 times a week.
Treatment for adults with megaloblastic anemia:
- Injectable form: Use 1 ampoule (500mcg Mecobalamin) for intramuscular or intravenous injection, 3 times a week. After 2 months of treatment, reduce to a maintenance dose: 1 ampoule every 1-3 months.

- The dosage of Methycobal for children has not been studied or determined. Consult a doctor before using this medication for children.
- You can take Methycobal 500mg with or without food. However, to reduce stomach irritation, it is recommended to take the medication with food. Additionally, you should take the entire tablet with a full glass of water.
