What is Ketosteril?

Ketosteril is a medicine used for individuals with protein metabolism disorders associated with chronic kidney disease. It is also used to treat malnutrition or protein deficiency caused by inadequate dietary intake. So, what exactly is Ketosteril?

1. What is Ketosteril?

Ketosteril is a medicine that helps regulate protein metabolism in the body and slows the progression of chronic kidney disease  to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It also helps prevent the causes of chronic kidney disease.

The components of Ketosteril include:

  • Isoleucine 67mg
  • Phenylalanine 68mg
  • Leucine 101mg
  • Valine 86mg
  • L-lysine 105mg
  • Methionine 59mg
  • L-tryptophan 23mg
  • L-threonine 53mg
  • L-tyrosine 30mg
  • L-histidine 38mg
  • Nitrogen 36mg

2. Ketosteril helps prevent the causes of chronic kidney disease

Ketosteril is used for prevention and preservation in patients with chronic kidney disease and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) ranging about 5-15 ml/min. It is typically used alongside a low-protein diet (40 grams of protein per day for adults or less).

Ketosteril helps alleviate symptoms associated with elevated blood urea levels, decrease proteinuria, prevent body protein breakdown, and regulate calcium-phosphate metabolism, parathyroid hormone excess, and kidney-related osteoporosis. It also helps improve carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, and endocrine disturbances.

Ketosteril allows the body to receive essential amino acids while minimizing nitrogen intake. After being absorbed into the body, the keto- and hydroxy-analogues are metabolized into essential amino acids by reutilizing nitrogen from non-essential amino acids, reducing urea formation by recycling amino groups.

As a result, the accumulation of uremic toxins is decreased. The keto- and hydroxy-acids do not cause ultrafiltration in the remaining nephrons.Furthermore, Ketosteril has a beneficial effect on phosphate metabolism and secondary hyperparathyroidism in kidney disease.

Bone mineralization disorders caused by kidney disease can also improve with Ketosteril use. When combined with a very low-protein diet, Ketosteril helps reduce nitrogen intake, preventing serious consequences from protein supplementation in kidney disease patients.

How to Use Ketosteril:

  • Ketosteril should be used according to the doctor's instructions. Do not adjust the dosage or extend the duration of use beyond the prescribed recommendations.
  • Take Ketosteril with food and do not chew the tablets.
  • During the use of Ketosteril, it is important to monitor the protein intake. Before dialysis, the protein intake should not exceed 40 grams/day for adults. For children aged 3-10 years, it should be 1.4-0.8 grams/kg; for children over 10 years, it should be 1-0.6 grams/kg. Consult a doctor during dialysis.

3. Side effects and contraindications of Ketosteril

Ketosteril may cause hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels). It is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients, have hypercalcemia, or have amino acid metabolism disorders.

Precautions should be taken when using Ketosteril in the following cases:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People using other medications or supplements
  • The elderly and children
  • People with a history of phenylketonuria

4. Drug Interactions with Ketosteril

Using Ketosteril with other calcium-containing medications can lead to excessive calcium levels in the blood. Since Ketosteril helps alleviate symptoms of hyperuremia, the use of aluminum hydroxide should be reduced. Caution is required to prevent low phosphate levels in the blood.

To avoid drug interactions, avoid using Ketosteril with medications that reduce calcium solubility, such as tetracyclines.

These are essential details about Ketosteril. Please consult your doctor thoroughly before using this medication for the best results.
