From June to August 2022, Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital conducted free examinations and screenings for breast and thyroid diseases for about 300 people in Da Nang city, the Central and the Central Highlands regions. This was one of the largest community campaigns organized by a private healthcare system in this locality.
The series of activities within the “Community Health Education - Screening for Breast and Thyroid Diseases” program for adult women organized by Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital included three events on June 26, July 30, and August 27, 2022. Notably, the screening results at the event on July 30, 2022 revealed that 44.5% of the attendees had health concerns connected to the breast gland, and this rate for the thyroid group was approximately 40%.
These programs aimed to raise women’s awareness about breast and thyroid diseases, as well as encourage them to actively take frequent screening for early detection of breast cancer and thyroid cancer. Breast and thyroid cancer screening and early diagnosis play an extremely important role in the treatment process, helping to boost cure rates, lower treatment costs, and help patients protect and maintain the function of these organs. Periodic medical examination of thyroid and breast is necessary to promptly detect the disease, even when the risk of the disease is still latent or in the early stages. Doctors can give appropriate advice and treatment directions based on the screening results.
At each event, doctors at Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital advised and answered questions about thyroid and breast diseases. During the ultrasound and screening process, the doctors continued to deliver additional in-depth explanations regarding breast lesions and some innovative intervention strategies to treat benign lesions with minimal invasiveness. The doctors also provided instructions on how to prevent diseases with proper nutrition and exercise, corresponding to each person’s health status and age.
Sharing about the goals and meanings of the breast and thyroid cancer screening program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Phuoc - Director of Operations, Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital said that: “Screening and early detection of cancer is one of the most effective strategies for lowering cancer fatalities (about 20%), since by undergoing specific treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and combinations with other advanced methods, such as hormonal therapy, biological therapy (targeted treatment), breast cancer patients can be saved. Patients with Stage 1 breast cancer often have a high survival rate (over 5 years) of 80-90%. Screening and early detection of breast cancer also provides opportunities for breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) as well as reducing the amount of medication, time and cost of treatment.”
Customers who took part in the program were pleased with the benefits and hoped that Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital would continue to deploy similar activities in other areas of the locality. This series of events has piqued the interest of Da Nang residents owing to the practical benefits it provides to participants. Ms. Huong (35 years old, Da Nang City), a customer participating in the event shared that: “Thanks to the event, I clearly understood my health condition, changed my mindset about health care and early detection of problems and risks that can occur at this age. In the future, I will proactively have regular screening to detect and promptly treat any diseases. That way, I may have peace of mind and fully enjoy my life to the fullest. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff members of Vinmec Da Nang for organizing such a meaningful program for the community.”
Recognizing the social responsibility to the community and realizing the mission of providing healthcare services for everyone, Vinmec Da Nang International Hospital will further replicate this model in the Central and Central Highlands regions, reaching more people in the age group at risk of breast and thyroid disease. It is expected that similar programs will be organized from now until the end of 2022, reaching more than 1,000 participants.
