Uses of Vaginax

Vaginax is a vaginal suppository containing 500mg of Metronidazole and 100mg of Miconazole. This prescription medication is used to treat various gynecological infections. For optimal results, patients should adhere to the prescribed instructions.

1. What is Vaginax used for?

Vaginax is a vaginal suppository containing 500mg of Metronidazole and 100mg of Miconazole, formulated with appropriate excipients to form one suppository.
Vaginax is indicated for the treatment of vaginitis caused by bacterial, fungal, or mixed infections.

2. Indications and contraindications of Vaginax

Vaginax is indicated for the treatment of vaginitis presenting with vaginal discharge, itching due to various causes. Specifically:

  • Trichomonal vaginitis and urethritis.
  • Fungal infections, Candida fungus in the vagina and vulva-vagina.
  • Anaerobic bacterial vaginosis caused by Metronidazole-sensitive bacteria.
  • Mixed vaginal infections involving gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, and fungi.

Vaginax is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the medication, Metronidazole and/or Miconazole, and other imidazole derivatives.
  • Patients with hepatic impairment.
  • Patients with porphyria.
  • Co-administration of Vaginax with warfarin, astemizole, or cisapride is contraindicated.

3. Dosage and Administration of Vaginax

One Vaginax vaginal suppository should be inserted before bedtime for 10 consecutive days. Treatment may be continued for several additional days until symptoms are fully resolved. The treating physician will determine the specific dosage and treatment duration based on the individual patient's condition.
Prior to insertion, the Vaginax suppository should be refrigerated for 10 minutes. The vaginal area should also be thoroughly cleansed.
The suppository should then be inserted as deeply as comfortably possible into the vagina using a finger while lying on the back for optimal results.
If Vaginax is accidentally ingested orally, immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate management.

4. Adverse Effects of Vaginax

When using Vaginax, patients may experience adverse reactions including itching, irritation of the vaginal lining, and a feeling of heat or burning, particularly at the beginning of treatment. Therefore, if any other side effects occur, patients should consult their physician for appropriate guidance.

5. Vaginax Drug Interactions

  • Miconazole, a component of Vaginax vaginal suppositories, is absorbed into the bloodstream at a rate of less than 1.3%. Therefore, no drug interactions have been reported during its use.
  • Concomitant use of Metronidazole and Phenobarbital may increase the metabolism of Metronidazole, leading to faster elimination of Metronidazole.
  • Metronidazole has a disulfiram-like effect; therefore, concurrent use of these two drugs is not recommended to avoid neurotoxic effects such as psychosis, and confusion.
  • Metronidazole increases the effect of anticoagulants, especially warfarin. Therefore, concurrent use of these two medications is not recommended.
  • Metronidazole used in patients with high blood lithium levels can further increase serum lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
  • Metronidazole increases the effect of vecuronium, a non-depolarizing muscle relaxant.
  • If patients use Metronidazole concurrently with Cimetidine, it may increase Metronidazole concentration.
  • Metronidazole and Miconazole inhibit the metabolism of Astemizole and Terfenadine, leading to increased plasma concentrations of Astemizole and Terfenadine. The combination of Metronidazole and Miconazole may alter the plasma concentrations of theophylline and procainamide if used concurrently.

6. Precautions for using the drug Vaginax

During Vaginax treatment, patients should be aware of the following:
Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment to prevent re-infection and to allow for treatment of your partner. Vaginax may also make barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms and diaphragms, less effective.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Vaginax to ensure the safety of you and your baby.
It is recommended to avoid alcohol and stimulants during treatment to ensure the medication works effectively.
