1. Therapeutic uses of Legalon 

Legalon contains Silymarin (extracted from the fruit of the Silybum Marianum plant - known as milk thistle). This ingredient has the function of enhancing the liver's detoxification capabilities, stimulating the regeneration of liver cells (hepatocytes), protecting them from damage caused by toxins (alcohol, liver toxins, etc.), and increasing immune responses capacity.

Legalon is indicated for the supportive treatment of certain liver diseases such as:

  • Acute and chronic hepatitis, fatty liver, liver failure;
  • Protect hepatocytes, restore liver function for people who drink alcohol or are poisoned (by food or chemicals);
  • People using drugs harmful to liver cells: tuberculosis, cancer, diabetes medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, neuroactive drugs,...;
  • People with liver dysfunction: Fatigue, loss of appetite, jaundice, indigestion, allergies, constipation, urinary retention,...;
  • Prevent and support the treatment of cirrhosis, liver cancer,...

Contraindications for using Legalon:

  • People who are hypersensitive to the ingredients of the drug;
  • Patients with hepatic coma, obstructive jaundice, primary biliary cirrhosis.

2. How to use Legalon and therapeutic dosages: 

How to use: Swallow the whole tablet with a full glass of water, do not chew or break the tablet. It is recommended to take the medicine after meals to achieve the best effect.

Dosage: Adjusted according to the age and symptoms of each patient (as prescribed by the doctor). Dosage reference is as followed:

  • Liver disease and alcoholic cirrhosis: Use a dose of 2 tablets of 70mg three times a day for 3 - 6 months;
  • Maintenance treatment: Use a dose of 1 tablet of 70mg x 3 times/day.

Overdose: When experiencing signs of overdose, the patient should stop taking the medication and immediately go to the nearest hospital for timely treatment.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Legalon, you should take it as soon as possible. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose as scheduled.

3. Side effects of Legalon:

Some unwanted side effects that may occur when using Legalon include: headaches and diarrhea in the initial days. After that, these symptoms will disappear. Rare side effects include: Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash or difficulty breathing. Patients should inform their doctor about any side effects experienced while taking the medication to receive appropriate advice.

4. Cautions when using Legalon:

Before and while using Legalon, patients need to be aware:

  • Before taking the medication, you should inform your doctor if: You are allergic to any substances, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any health issues you have had or are currently experiencing,...;
  • Be cautious when using the medication in pregnant and breastfeeding women; it is advisable to consult a doctor before use.
  • Using medication is not a substitute for avoiding the root causes of liver damage (e.g., alcohol);
  • Inform the doctor if you notice any signs of jaundice or yellowing of the whites of the eyes;
  • There is not enough data on the use of the drug in children. Therefore, Legalon should not be used for children under 12 years old;

When using Legalon, patients need to strictly follow the doctor's instructions. If any side effects occur, patients should immediately contact their doctor for optimal resolve.
