How long after breast augmentation can you have intercourse?

Sexual intercourse is a healthy part of life for most people. However, for those who have just undergone breast augmentation surgery, it is important to be aware and clearly understand how long after the surgery they can engage in sexual intercourse.

1. What happens after breast augmentation surgery?

The breast implant surgery procedure usually does not last more than an hour, after which the patient is transferred to the recovery room. If no complications occur, the patient can go home within 24 to 48 hours after the surgery.
There is a minimal level of pain after breast augmentation surgery. However, most patients report a certain level of discomfort, a feeling of tightness and pressure in the chest area. All of these are normal because the body needs time to adapt to the new implant.

The cosmetic surgeon may prescribe antibiotics after breast augmentation surgery to help you avoid infection.Painkillers are also prescribed to minimize discomfort. However, patients need to adhere to certain rules to achieve the best results and navigate favorably during the recovery period.

2. How long after breast augmentation can you have sexual intercourse?

Although you may be uncomfortable with the restriction on sexual activity, it is important to wait until your breasts have healed to engage in intimate activities. The two biggest concerns with breast surgery are wound rupture and bleeding, which can occur due to excessive physical activity, including sexual intercourse.

For breast procedures, it is best to wait at least two weeks before having sexual intercourse. Pay attention to your incision; it is prone to infection and bleeding if not properly cared for.

After the first two weeks, approach physical intimacy carefully and slowly. When having sex after breast augmentation, avoid manipulating or moving the breasts as it may disrupt the placement of the implants for about six weeks.

The timeline will differ if you have undergone breast augmentation surgery along with breast enhancement. Regardless of the exact breast procedure you underwent, get the final word on when you can resume sexual activity from your cosmetic surgeon.

3. Why shouldn't you have sexual intercourse after breast augmentation?

Can you have sexual intercourse after breast augmentation? This is a question from many clients after undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Most patients undergo breast augmentation surgery to look more attractive. Usually,  going through the procedure increases their sexual desire. They look and feel better, and they want to share that with their partner. But is having sex soon after breast augmentation safe?

The final results of the breast augmentation procedure may take some time to show. This means that the breasts may not look their best in the first few weeks after surgery.

Furthermore, your partner should know that all types of pressure on the breasts should be avoided. This means that pulling or rubbing the breast can cause pain. Additionally, the weight of your partner leaning forward (and on your chest) can cause discomfort and even potential complications (such as implant displacement).

When having sexual intercourse, due to stimulation, the breasts may swell. When this happens too soon after surgery, it can cause pain and discomfort. This is why you should proceed with caution during your first sexual intercourse after the surgery. You can have soft and gentle intercourse one or two weeks after surgery if you feel comfortable. Higher-intensity physical activities should be postponed for at least one or two months after the procedure.

4. Post-operative care after breast augmentation

4.1. The period from 1 to 5 days after surgery

In the first few days of recovery after surgery, you may feel tired and sore, which means you should spend a lot of time sleeping and relaxing on the couch or in bed. You will be allowed to shower two days after the surgery, but you should face away from the showerhead and use lukewarm water. You can remove the bandages and compression bra at this time, but the bra must be put back on immediately after showering.

During this time, it may be helpful if friends or family members assist you with daily activities and tasks that require the use of your upper body, such as preparing food and washing dishes. This recovery period is a great time to help you relax.

4.2. The period from 1 to 2 weeks after surgery

After the first week, you may feel better, but you should still be more cautious. You should not attend work, school, or extracurricular activities for 10 days after your procedure. Do not lift, push, or pull anything heavier than 5 pounds for two weeks after surgery, and be sure to avoid strenuous activities that raise blood pressure and heart rate or require excessive use of the arms and chest. The wound healing process will be completed approximately 10 days after your procedure.

At this point, you should return to work or school, but you should still be cautious when doing upper body exercises and exerting yourself.

Avoid wearing underwired bras until your doctor tells you it's fine, as wearing them too soon can affect the position of the implants and your long-term results.
