Hello Doctor,
I recently underwent minor surgery for mixed hemorrhoid removal a week ago. For the past two days, I have had two bowel movements each day. Today, I had three, and the urge was very sudden and uncontrollable. Occasionally, I feel slight abdominal pain and the need to defecate. Doctor, is frequent bowel movements with abdominal pain after mixed hemorrhoid surgery something to worry about? Could this be a post-surgical complication? Thank you.

Hello,
Regarding your question, “Frequent bowel movements and abdominal pain after mixed hemorrhoid surgery: is it a concern?”, I would like to address the following:
It’s unclear which surgical method was used in your case. Currently, mixed hemorrhoid surgery often involves a combination of the Longo procedure and removal of external hemorrhoids or anal skin tags. During the first 1–2 weeks after surgery, the rectal and anal area may still be inflamed and swollen, and the anal sphincter may not yet fully recover its normal function, potentially causing changes in bowel movement reflexes. However, if your symptoms do not gradually improve or worsen, with additional signs such as severe anal pain, loss of bowel control, or bleeding, you should promptly revisit your surgeon for an evaluation and specific advice.
If you have further concerns about frequent bowel movements and abdominal pain following mixed hemorrhoid surgery, you may visit a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
Best regards!
