Question
Hello doctor,
Since the 3rd day of Tet, I have had diarrhea every day but only once a day, some days early in the morning without eating or drinking anything, I have had diarrhea 3-4 times in a row. I always feel like I want to go but my stomach doesn't hurt, along with frequent urination, painful urination and a little blood for 3 days. Currently, I only have frequent urination and a little painful urination about 20% but still have diarrhea. I feel very uncomfortable. So, doctor, can you tell me what causes prolonged diarrhea and frequent urination? Thank you, doctor.

Hello,
With the question "What causes prolonged diarrhea and frequent urination?", I would like to answer as follows:
If you have prolonged diarrhea with frequent urination and painful urination, you may have a urinary tract infection accompanied by irritable bowel syndrome.
Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria appear in the urinary tract, causing the body to create reactions against the invasion of those bacteria.
Signs of urinary tract infections include: Patients feel pain, burning, and discomfort when urinating:
- When having a urinary tract infection, the urinary tract tissues, where bacteria invade, will become inflamed and become very sensitive, so when urine passes through these tissues, the patient will feel pain and burning.
- Urinary retention: Patients urinate frequently, have the feeling of needing to urinate, and want to urinate again right after urinating, but the amount of urine is very little and intermittent.
- Lower abdominal pain: This is considered an early warning sign that the patient's bladder is infected. The patient feels dull pain or cramps.
- Cloudy, foul-smelling urine: The urine of healthy people with no health problems is usually odorless and in some cases only has a slight ammonia smell. When having a urinary tract infection, the patient will notice that their urine has a foul odor or an unusual odor accompanied by cloudy urine.
- Poor bladder control.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a phenomenon of intestinal dysfunction, recurring many times, when the patient goes to the doctor, does tests, but does not find any anatomical or biochemical lesions in the intestine.
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include the main forms: Abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea.
- Abdominal pain: The pain has no specific characteristics, no certain location, can be along the colon, more pain after eating or sometimes before finishing eating, when eating strange food, food left for a long time. In many cases, there may also be pain due to a cold stomach. The pain may only last for 1-2 days but can also last for many days continuously, the pain may occur several times a month but some patients only have pain once every several months.
- Constipation and diarrhea: Constipation is often accompanied by mucus covering the stool. One thing to note is that the stool in this case is never mixed with blood, if there is, it is not irritable bowel syndrome.
However, to determine the diagnosis and have appropriate treatment, you should immediately go to a reputable medical facility with 2 departments of Nephrology - Urology and Digestion as well as have the necessary equipment so that if necessary, the doctor will have you do tests to find the cause such as tests, ultrasound, colonoscopy.
If you still have questions about prolonged diarrhea with frequent urination, you can go to a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for your trust and for sending questions to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
