1. What is Fobancort?
Fobancort is a topical medication formulated as a cream to treat dermatological conditions caused by inflammation with bacterial infection. Each gram of Fobancort cream contains:
0.02g Fusidic Acid: an antibiotic with antibacterial effects. Fusidic acid in topical form is used for infections on the skin, both superficial and deep. Fusidic acid is commonly prescribed to treat skin infections caused by viruses, staphylococcus, streptococcus, and other microorganisms sensitive to fusidic acid.
0.00064g Betamethasone Dipropionate: a synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties, used to treat symptoms like itching, skin irritation, and swelling.
Excipients: Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Liquid Paraffin, Soft White Paraffin, Cetomacrogol, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, and Purified Water.
2. What are the uses of Fobancort and when is it prescribed?
The fusidic acid component has antibacterial properties against most gram-positive bacteria, especially pathogenic Staphylococcus strains, including those producing penicillinase. Betamethasone dipropionate is an anti-inflammatory substance with anti-itching and vasoconstrictor effects.
Due to the combination of these two active ingredients, Fobancort is typically prescribed for the following conditions:
- Bacterial inflammatory skin diseases.
- Contact dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, non-parasitic itching, dyshidrotic eczema.
- Seborrheic dermatitis (e.g., acne).
- Some simple forms of dermatitis: localized eczema, stasis dermatitis.
- Chronic lichen simplex (e.g., nuchal lichen).
- In combination with other antibiotics in cases of penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus infections, such as abscesses.
Additionally, it is prescribed for patients with systemic immune system disorders such as psoriasis (with or at risk of Staphylococcus or Streptococcus infection) and systemic lupus erythematosus.
3. How to use and dosage of Fobancort?
Before applying the medication, clean the affected skin area. Then, apply a thin, even layer of the cream, avoiding excessive application. Wait a moment for the medication to absorb into the skin. If necessary, the treated area can be bandaged after application.
Do not change the route or dosage without consulting a doctor.
The recommended dosage for Fobancort is as follows:
- For exposed skin areas, apply 2-3 times a day.
- For covered skin areas, apply 1-2 times a day.
Since the medication contains an antibiotic and corticosteroid, it should not be used for extended periods or abused, and should be discontinued once symptoms are treated.
The dosage mentioned above is generally suitable for common cases. For patients with more specific conditions, a doctor should be consulted for tailored dosage recommendations.
4. Who should not use Fobancort?
Fobancort should not be used in the following cases:
People who are sensitive or allergic to Fusidic acid, Betamethasone, or any other ingredients in the medication.
Inflammation around the mouth.
Open wounds or ulcers.
Pregnant women.
Breastfeeding women.
People with viral infections: shingles, herpes, chickenpox.
People with fungal or viral infections.
Rosacea.
Infants under 1 year old.
5. Potential side effects of using Fobancort
Possible side effects include irritation, redness, itching, dry skin, folliculitis, increased hair growth, acne, skin atrophy, and capillary dilation.
If any unwanted side effects occur, inform the treating doctor immediately.
6. Drug interactions of Fobancort with other medications
Fusidic acid antagonizes Ciprofloxacin. It interacts with penicillins. The combination of penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus and fusidic acid can prevent the emergence of fusidic acid-resistant Staphylococcus mutations, potentially making it effective in clinical treatment.
7. Important considerations when using Fobancort
Topical antibiotics can sometimes cause overgrowth of resistant bacteria. If this occurs or if any irritation is noticed, discontinue the medication.
Do not apply to the eyes or around the eyes.
Do not use for children under 2 years old unless prescribed by a doctor.
Store Fobancort carefully in a cool, dry place, away from light, and below 30°C.
