Admitted to the emergency room of Vinmec Phu Quoc hospital in a critical condition with left abdominal pain, inability to breathe deeply due to pain, and low blood pressure, Mr. Hua Vinh Tu (born in 1956 in Ham Ninh, Phu Quoc) was diagnosed with septic shock and generalized peritonitis due to rupture of acute diverticulitis.
Assessing that Mr. Tu's condition was critical with a high risk of death from septic shock, the doctors immediately conducted pre-operative tests and resuscitated him for emergency surgery. Doctor Phan Phi Tuan - Head of the General Surgery Department, said, "Besides a bloated abdominal wall caused by ruptured colon diverticulum, Mr. Tu's condition was even more critical because he had an underlying medical condition, which is his uncontrolled high blood sugar.” Thus, in order for the patient to be able to undergo surgery, the doctors also performed medical treatment to resuscitate the patient against septic shock and stabilize his blood sugar first.
Immediately after his blood sugar was stabilized, Mr. Tu underwent a laparotomy to clean his abdomen and inspect the peritonitis and ruptured colonic diverticulum. Doctor Phi Tuan - the main surgeon, performed a diverticulectomy and sutured the diverticulum opening from the left colon. For cases of diverticulitis, in addition to abdominal cleansing, surgery often entails resection of the colon that contains the diverticulum. However, in Mr. Tu's case, after assessing that cutting and suturing the diverticulum opening could completely solve the patient's problem, Dr. Phi Tuan decided not to cut the colon or perform a colostomy on the patient. Colectomy and colostomy will make the patient's quality of life very poor as he would have to carry a stoma pouch for a long time and then visit the hospital later for surgery to close the stoma. That would be costly and time-consuming for the patient.
The surgery was a success and Mr. Tu was then transferred to the ICU for resuscitation. He quickly recovered and left the hospital a few days later.
Returning to the hospital for a follow-up, Mr. Tu's health improved a lot. He was excited sharing, “I am very grateful to the doctors and nurses at Vinmec, especially Dr. Phi Tuan – the one who gave me a second chance to live again and who took care of me during my stay at the hospital.
