An upper GI series is a procedure that uses X-rays and a barium-based contrast medium to create images of the inside of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It is a safe, noninvasive imaging tool that can be used to help diagnose pain, acid reflux, bloody stools, and other upper GI symptoms.
