Ultrasound image of postpartum placenta and treatment
Retained placenta occurs in approximately 1-3% of deliveries and is a relatively common cause of obstetric morbidity. It is usually diagnosed when the placenta fails to separate spontaneously during the third stage of labor when the patient has excessive bleeding in the absence of placental separation or if there is confirmation of retained placenta after the majority of the placenta has been delivered spontaneously.
