Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common medical and surgical emergency. Most of the symptoms of AP are mild and self-recovery (80-85%), while the remaining 15-20% may progress to severe complications and high mortality (up to 30-40%). Some cases initially present with mild clinical symptoms of AP but then develop severe AP leading to shock, sepsis, multiple organ failure and death.
