Foreign bodies and gastrointestinal residues in adults
In adults, foreign body ingestion is rare and usually an accident. About 80-90% of swallowed foreign bodies pass out of the body without any intervention. Endoscopic intervention to remove foreign bodies is only necessary in 10-20% of cases and surgical intervention is required in less than 1%. In the entire digestive tract, the esophagus is the most common site of obstruction. Foreign bodies or food often become obstructed at physiological or pathological esophageal narrowing.
