A normal newborn's umbilical cord contains three blood vessels: two arteries and one vein. The veins in the umbilical cord carry oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the fetus, while the arteries in the umbilical cord carry oxygenated blood, unwanted waste products (such as carbon dioxide), and nutrient-depleted blood back to the placenta and mother's bloodstream.
