Tavanic 500mg is an oral antibiotic commonly prescribed for bacterial infections. What is Tavanic 500mg, and how does it work?
1. What is Tavanic 500mg?
Tavanic 500mg is an antibiotic containing the active ingredient levofloxacin at a dose of 500mg per film-coated tablet. It is manufactured by Sanofi, a well-known pharmaceutical company from France.
Besides 'Tavanic,' it is also marketed as Levo DHG, Levofloxacin Imex, or simply under its active ingredient, levofloxacin.
This antibiotic is part of the fluoroquinolone group and is used to treat bacterial infections in adults. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as:
- Respiratory infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
- Kidney infections (pyelonephritis), prostate infections, or urinary tract infections (UTIs).
- Skin and soft tissue infections, and even plague.
Levofloxacin works by killing bacteria by inhibiting DNA synthesis. It achieves this by directly targeting bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. The active ingredient has a broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including atypical bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.
Notably, Tavanic 500mg (or any antibiotic containing levofloxacin) has no effect on viral infections like the flu or common cold.
Therefore, for colds/flu, you should not overuse tavanic antibiotics because the disease will not improve, and there is a high possibility of making the body "resistant to antibiotics" (in other words, antibiotic resistance with considerable consequences).
2. What are the uses of Tavanic 500mg?
Tavanic 500mg is indicated for the treatment of many infectious diseases, however the dosage is not always the same. Depending on the type of infection as well as the severity of the current disease, doctors will prescribe the appropriate dose of tavanic 500mg. Besides, the tavanic 500mg dosage also often depends on kidney activity.
For patients with normal and healthy kidney function, some common tavanic dosage indications are as follows:
- Acute sinusitis requires 500mg (equivalent to 1 tablet) / time per day and continuously for 10 to 14 days.
- Acute attacks in patients with chronic bronchitis will be prescribed from 0.5 to 1 tablet of tavanic 500mg per day and taken for 7 to 10 days.
- For urinary tract infections, if there are no complications, the dose of tavanic 500mg will range from 250mg to 500mg per day and be taken continuously for 3 days. In the case of complicated urinary tract infections, the dose is the same but lasts for 7 to 10 days.
- For pneumonia, you should take 500mg / 2 times a day and take about 7 to 14 days continuously.
- If you have a skin or soft tissue infection, the daily dose is 500mg / 2 times a day and taken for about 7 to 14 days continuously.
- In patients with renal failure, the dosage of tavanic will be reduced because the active ingredient levofloxacin in the drug is excreted mainly through the kidneys.
3. What is the Contraindications for Tavanic 500mg?
The vast majority of Western medicines have contraindications for certain groups of people, and tavanic 500mg is no exception although this is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is commonly used by most people. Some groups of people who should avoid using tavanic include:
-People who have allergic reactions to ingredients in tavanic as well as antibiotics in the same fluoroquinolone group.
-Patients with epilepsy.
-Tavanic 500mg is contraindicated for children, adolescents, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
In addition to the subjects in the contraindicated group, the use of tavanic requires special caution in the following cases:
-Elderly people, especially those aged 65 and above.
-People who are using additional corticosteroids or other steroid drugs.
-Patients with a history of stroke, brain injuries, or mental health disorders.
-People with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
-Patients with diabetes or problems with the liver, kidneys, cardiovascular system…
4. What are the Potential Side Effects of Tavanic 500mg?
Common side effects of Tavanic 500mg include nausea, diarrhea, and elevated liver enzymes. Accordingly, rare but significant side effects of tavanic 500mg include:
- A tingling sensation in the palms or soles of the feet, accompanied by tremors and paresthesia.
- Increased negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, restlessness, and a risk of depression.
- Irregular heartbeat, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, and low blood pressure.
- Mild fever and general fatigue.
- Pale skin, unexplained bruising, excessive bleeding, and signs of a skin rash.
- Women may experience gynecological issues such as vaginal dryness or itching.
- Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight, raising the risk of sunburn…
- Tendon pain, tendon inflammation, and in rare cases, tendon rupture.
- Changes in white blood cell counts, increase susceptibility to bacterial or fungal infections unresponsive to the medication.
- Hepatitis, impaired kidney function, or in severe cases, kidney failure.
- Hallucinations and psychotic reactions may elevate the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior.
It should also be noted that tavanic 500mg interacts with many drugs such as:
- Tendon inflammation or rupture when interacting with corticosteroids.
- Patients have an increased risk of bleeding when interacting with warfarin.
- For nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and theophylline, interaction with tavanic 500mg can lead to seizures due to epilepsy.
Tavanic 500mg is an effective antibiotic for bacterial infections but has no effect on viral infections. Therefore, it must be used cautiously to avoid the unpredictable consequences of antibiotic resistance.
