Uses, Dosage, and Precautions for Side Effects of Tebonin

Article by Pharmacist Quang Anh Nguyet - Chief Pharmacist - Pharmacy Department - Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital

Tebonin is a medication that enhances blood circulation, particularly in small blood vessels. It improves the blood supply, oxygen, and essential energy substances to brain tissues. To ensure effective treatment, patients should strictly follow the instructions of their doctor or pharmacist.

1. Ingredients and Benefits of Tebonin

What is Tebonin? Tebonin contains 120 mg of dry extract from Ginkgo biloba leaves (EGb 761). This medication improves blood circulation, especially in small vessels, enhancing the supply of blood, oxygen, and vital energy substances to brain tissues. Additionally, it boosts concentration, strengthens memory, stabilizes mood, and increases tolerance to stress.

Tebonin is primarily indicated for the treatment of circulatory and peripheral circulatory disorders, specifically:

  • Acute and chronic cerebrovascular disease, decreased focus and memory, and dementia caused by cerebral arteriosclerosis.
  • Circulatory and neural disorders in the ears: tinnitus and dizziness.
  • Circulatory and neural disorders in the eyes: diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.
  • Peripheral blood flow and neural disorders: conditions such as peripheral artery obstruction, intermittent claudication, and coldness or numbness in extremities.

2. Dosage of Tebonin for Adults and Children

Tebonin is administered orally, regardless of meals. Patients should swallow the film-coated tablet (without chewing) with a small amount of water. The specific dosage for adults and children is as follows:

2.1 Adults (Over 18 Years Old)

For individuals aged 18 and above, the recommended dose is 1 tablet per dose, twice daily (120–240 mg/day of Ginkgo biloba dry extract). If using doses higher than the recommended levels or for prolonged periods, patients must consult their doctor. Treatment duration depends on the severity of symptoms and should last at least eight weeks for chronic conditions.

2.2 Children Under 12 Years Old

Tebonin is not recommended for children under 12 years of age due to the lack of sufficient research on this population.

3. Common Side Effects of Tebonin

In general, Ginkgo is well-tolerated, but rare adverse effects may occur, such as mild gastrointestinal disturbances, headaches, or allergic reactions (redness, swelling, itching).

In isolated cases, prolonged treatment with Ginkgo-based products has been associated with bleeding incidents; however, a direct correlation between the symptoms and the drug has not been established.

4. Precautions for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

Experimental studies have not demonstrated any harmful effects on fetuses. However, adequate studies in humans are lacking. Ginkgo biloba extracts may reduce platelet aggregation, potentially increasing bleeding tendencies. Therefore, the benefits and risks should be carefully weighed when considering its use during pregnancy.

No data are available on whether Ginkgo biloba or its metabolites are excreted in breast milk. Consequently, Tebonin 120 mg is not recommended for breastfeeding women.

5. Additional Precautions When Using Tebonin

Tebonin 120 mg should not be used by individuals with lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, as the excipients in the formulation include lactose. Additionally, those concurrently taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents or Bleeding diathesis (internal bleeding) should avoid this medication. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue Tebonin 3-4 days prior to the procedure.

Tebonin is contraindicated for individuals hypersensitive to its ingredients and for children under 12 years old. No well-documented cases of overdose symptoms have been reported to date.

Tebonin enhances blood circulation, particularly in small vessels, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain tissues. To ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes, patients should use this medication strictly according to their doctor's prescription or the pharmacist's guidance.
