Improper use of air conditioning can easily dry out the respiratory tract, leading to difficulty breathing, fever and diarrhea, ... in young children, especially newborns. Besides, staying in the room all day instead of going out , the child will not synthesize vitamin D from sunlight, leading to fussiness, night sweats, poor sleep at night, and decreased resistance.
1. Suitable temperature and time for children to lie in air conditioning
The fetus in the mother's womb for 40 weeks is always surrounded by the mother's body temperature of about 37.5 degrees Celsius - 38 degrees Celsius. When born, the child is very susceptible to cold if not properly cared for such as wearing clothes, wrapping a towel, wearing a hat or placing skin-to-skin with the mother.
The body temperature of newborns cannot adapt to the air-conditioned temperature like full-term babies and adults, so the room temperature needs to be adjusted to 27-28 degrees Celsius during the day and 28-29 degrees Celsius at night.
In addition, children should not be allowed to lie in the air conditioning for more than 4 consecutive hours a day. After about 4 hours, let the baby go outside at normal temperature for about 10 - 15 minutes. To avoid sudden changes in temperature that can cause heat shock, parents should open the door 10 minutes in advance so that children can gradually get used to the outside air. If it is a night sleep, parents can set the timer to turn off the air conditioner after 4 hours so that the room temperature gradually returns to normal.
2. Check your child's body temperature
Children should wear clothes, gloves, socks, hats and thin blankets when lying in the air conditioner, pay attention to changing diapers regularly to create a dry feeling, if the diaper is wet, the child can easily catch a cold.
Check your child's body temperature with a thermometer, if you see the child sweating, you need to dry it, especially the back and chest, otherwise the child may be infected with respiratory diseases.
3. Instructions when letting your child lie in the air conditioner
- Do not let your child lie directly where the cold air is blown from the air conditioner.
- Do not put a fan in a room with an air conditioner.
- The room needs to be airy, clean and not have too many objects in the room (easy to grow mold).
- There should not be too many people in the room (easy to spread respiratory diseases).
- Do not carry your child in and out of the room frequently because the temperature difference can cause the child to have increased secretions in the nose and throat.
- Breastfeed your baby fully
When a newborn is cared for at full term, the baby's normal body temperature will be around 36.5 degrees Celsius - 37.5 degrees Celsius. If the baby is dressed and kept warm in a blanket, he or she can withstand a room temperature of 25 degrees Celsius - 28 degrees Celsius. Therefore, parents should pay attention to the baby's body temperature to adjust the temperature as well as the direction of the air conditioner appropriately.
