Precautions When Using Albendazole

Albendazole is used to eliminate parasites and larvae. Before using this medication, it is essential to consult a doctor. Below are some insights to help you understand the uses of Albendazole.

1. Uses of Albendazole

Albendazole is commonly prescribed to treat infections caused by intestinal parasites, particularly dangerous worms and flukes. Caution is required when using the medication.
Besides eliminating intestinal worms and larvae, Albendazole can also be used to treat larvae on the skin. It is even considered for larvae that cause brain damage. In certain cases, patients may be prescribed Albendazole to treat hydatid cysts without surgery. However, research indicates that this treatment approach has many uncertainties, and while the treatment can be prolonged, its long-term benefits and efficacy remain unclear.

2. Dosage and How to Use Albendazole

Albendazole is available in chewable or crushable tablet forms. It is best taken when you are neither overly full nor excessively hungry. After chewing the tablet, drink a glass of water to help the medicine quickly reach the intestines or other affected areas with larvae.
Dosages depend on the patient and condition:

  • For worm infections: Deworming is generally done after children reach 2 years old. For children under 2, consult a doctor for advice.
    • Children over 2 years and adults typically take a single dose of 400 mg. If results are unsatisfactory, a second dose may be given after 3 weeks.
    • For children under 2, the dosage is halved to 200 mg.
  • For larvae on the skin: Adults take a single dose of 400 mg. Children should take a dose based on weight (5 mg/kg daily) for 3 days.
    • For hydatid cysts:
Children over 6 years old are treated for 28 days with a daily dose of 10–15 mg/kg. Treatment may be repeated if symptoms recur.
    • Adults take 800 mg/day divided into two doses for 28 days. Treatment may be repeated up to 5 cycles if needed.
  • For brain cysticercosis (pork tapeworm in the brain): The dose is calculated at 15 mg/kg daily for 30 days. If symptoms reappear after 3 weeks, consult a doctor.
  • For other types of tapeworms:
    • Children under 2 years take 200 mg daily for 3 consecutive days.
    • Children over 2 years and adults follow the same regimen, with the dose increased to 400 mg. Treatment may be repeated after 3 weeks if necessary.

3. Warnings Before Using Albendazole

Albendazole is contraindicated in certain patients. If you are allergic to any components of the drug, inform your doctor to consider alternatives. Pregnant women and those with a history of bone marrow toxicity should also consult their doctor for alternative treatments.
Since Albendazole is metabolized in the liver and kidneys, patients with impaired liver or kidney function should exercise caution. Discuss your most recent liver and kidney function tests with your doctor before starting treatment. Additionally, Albendazole contains lactose, which may pose issues for individuals with lactose intolerance, reducing the drug’s efficacy.

4. Side Effects of Albendazole

Albendazole is often used for short durations, so most patients experience mild discomfort such as headaches or digestive issues. However, severe reactions can occur, especially in patients with pre-existing health conditions. Potential side effects include:

  • High fever
  • Dizziness
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Hair loss
  • Reduced white blood cell count
  • Hives
  • Kidney failure
  • Low platelet count

Severe side effects can lead to serious consequences. If you feel unwell, contact a doctor immediately or visit the nearest medical center to determine the cause.

5. Drug Interactions with Albendazole

Albendazole may interact with other medications, affecting its efficacy. Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking and any conditions you have been diagnosed with or are at risk of developing to assess potential interactions.
The above information is intended for reference purposes only. To use Albendazole effectively, consult a doctor for detailed guidance and support.
