Pandemic outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City: Vinmec turning into COVID-19 support facility

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in Ho Chi Minh City, Vinmec Central Park International Hospital, a member of Vinmec, demonstrated its dedication by officially becoming a hospital to treat COVID-19. In the two months of July-August, according to the 3-4-5 direction of the Ho Chi Minh City health sector, Vinmec Central Park International Hospital has received and treated severe and extremely severe COVID-19 cases, which require the application of mechanical ventilation, dialysis, ECMO, etc.

On July 25, 2021, Vinmec Central Park International Hospital began treatment for the first F0 cases. After only 10 days, at the peak of the pandemic, the Board of Directors of Vinmec Healthcare System and Vinmec Central Park International Hospital decided to halt all daily medical examination and treatment activities. Following that, the Hospital focused on accepting and treating COVID-19 patients, as well as preparing resources to expand the treatment area, with the goal of transforming itself into a COVID-19 support facility.

In less than 24 hours after the call of the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Vingroup and the leaders of Ho Chi Minh City, thousands of employees of Vingroup, including many from other Vinmec Hospitals in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, and Ho Chi Minh City, have arrived at the hotspots, urgently participated in training sessions, and moved to different communities to collect test samples.

Vinmec has mobilized numerous employees and financial resources to support Ho Chi Minh City in the fight against the pandemic. On August 16, 2021, Vinmec Central Park International Hospital officially transformed into a specialized hospital for accepting and treating COVID-19 patients, with a capacity of 90 resuscitation beds and two special care units. Moreover, a team for home-based treatment of F0 patients was established.

Nearly 70 doctors and more than 140 nurses and technicians at Vinmec have worked in the front line, providing treatment for COVID patients according to the 3-4-5 direction of the Ho Chi Minh City health sector. Vinmec has treated severe and extremely severe cases requiring the intervention of mechanical ventilation, dialysis, ECMO, etc.

Vinmec has supported human resources and financial resources to support Ho Chi Minh City - the most severe Covid-19 area of Vietnam, where the number of daily infections is rapidly increasing.

In these “historic” days, the living conditions in the pandemic-stricken areas were difficult. Transportation was inconvenient, and meals were casually eaten. The medical workers here had to work for many hours in protective clothing under the hot summer to collect a greater number of sampling tests than expected. Vinmec's staff members and volunteers also face a lot of external pressure, yet they still persevere with their tasks and quickly adapt to cope with difficulties.

After completing its mission in the fight against COVID-19, starting on September 21, 2021, Vinmec Central Park gradually narrowed down its treatment activities. On October 1, 2021, the Hospital officially resumed its original medical examination and treatment activities while also maintaining COVID-19 treatment.

Within more than 4 months, from July 25 to December 31, 2021, Vinmec Central Park treated 1,036 patients, including 400 hospitalized. The Hospital has mobilized all human forces for COVID-19 treatment, following the “three on-spot” model, and has also allocated personnel to support the COVID-19 treatment in Binh Duong province. In addition to professional work, non-clinical staff have carried out logistical tasks such as cooking, transporting goods, cleaning, etc. thus contributing to the success of the fight against the pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City.

To recognize the efforts of Vinmec Central Park in the fight against COVID-19, many certificates of merit and appreciation were granted to the Hospital, including the Certificate of Merit from the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department, the visit by the Chairman of Long An province to the Hospital to express his gratitude for the Hospital’s support in conducting tests during the peak of the pandemic in this province.
