Question:
Dear, Doctor.
My fetus is about 6 weeks old, with a gestational sac measuring (GS) 10 mm, a layer of fluid measuring 6 mm, and a yolk sac measuring 5 mm. However, there is no embryo yet. Is it normal for a fetus of this age to not have an embryo?

Dear,
In response to your question about whether it's normal for a 6-week-old fetus to have no embryo, here's what I can tell you:
The embryo typically begins to form during the 5th week of pregnancy and develops throughout the 6th week. By this time, important developments occur, such as the neural tube closure along the back, the heart starting to pump blood, and otic and mandibular development. The embryo also begins to curve into a C shape, and limb buds start to appear.
Usually, around 5 to 6 weeks into pregnancy, the fertilized egg should show an embryo along with a gestational sac, which typically measures about 18 mm. In cases of an empty molar pregnancy, the gestational sac can develop without an embryo.
During the first weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound may detect a gestational sac measuring from 19 to 36 mm, even if an embryo is not visible yet. If, however, the embryo is still not detected between the 8th and 13th weeks, it may indicate an abnormality and the presence of only an empty gestational sac.
Since your ultrasound at 6 weeks did not show an embryo, it is advisable to consult a medical facility for further examination and consider scheduling another ultrasound in the next week of gestation.
If you have any more questions regarding your 6-week pregnancy without an embryo, I recommend visiting a medical facility or hospital within the Vinmec Health System for further evaluation and guidance. Thank you for trusting us with your questions, and I wish you good health.
Sincerely!
