Question
Hello doctor,
I am 28 years old now and pregnant for the first time, with a due date of October 13, 2021. I am currently 38 weeks pregnant. For the past two days, I have been experiencing a brownish mucus discharge, occasionally mixed with some clear fluid. It has no odor, and I am not suffering from abdominal pain.
Could you please advise me that brownish discharge at 38 weeks of pregnancy indicates any conditions? I look forward to your advice. Thank you very much.

Hi there,
In response to your question, "What does brownish discharge at 38 weeks of pregnancy indicate any conditions?", I would like to explain as follows:
The brownish mucus discharge could be due to changes in the cervix, causing small blood vessels in the cervix to rupture and bleed. This is one of the signs of pre-labor. If you have not experienced abdominal pain, just maintain good vaginal hygiene, monitor fetal movements, and attend your scheduled medical check-up. However, if the bleeding increases and the color of blood is red or if there is water discharge, or if you experience abdominal pain which lasts for 15 minutes/episode, or if fetal movements decrease less than 10 movements/2h , you should immediately go to the hospital for an emergent examination.
If you have further concerns regarding the brownish discharge at 38 weeks of pregnancy, you can visit a hospital belonging to Vinmec Healthcare System for a thorough medical check-up and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you all the best.
