Hello doctor,
I have had an IUD inserted for nearly 2 years and my period usually comes 1 week early every month, sometimes even earlier. Last month I had my period on the 20th but this month it still hasn't come, my period usually starts at least 3–4 days earlier than expected. So doctor, I have had an IUD inserted for 2 years but late period, is it pregnancy? Thank you doctor.

Answer
Dear,
Regarding the question, “I have had an IUD for 2 years but now my period is late. Could I be pregnant?”, here is the doctor's response:
An IUD is a device placed in the uterus to prevent eggs from implanting in the uterine lining, while also preventing fertilization. This method is widely used because its contraceptive effectiveness can reach 98%.
You have had an IUD for 2 years, but no contraceptive method is 100% effective. Therefore, if you have a late period this month or have other unusual symptoms, you should still take a pregnancy test and see an obstetrician and gynecologist for examination.
If you still have questions about having an IUD for 2 years but your period is late, you can go to a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for your trust and for sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
Best regards!
