How long after a miscarriage does your period return?

This article is professionally reviewed by obstetricians and gynecologists at Vinmec Central Park Hospital.
After a miscarriage, the return of menstruation depends on an individual's physical and mental health. So, how long does it take for the menstrual cycle to come back, and what should you do if it doesn't return after more than two months? Below, the obstetrician-gynecologist from Vinmec Central Park International Hospital will answer this question.
Typically, time for menstruation resuming is about 1–2 months after a miscarriage. This is the time needed for the endometrium to regenerate and for the ovaries to resume normal function. The new menstrual cycle starts from the first day you have your period following the miscarriage or termination of pregnancy.
However, in reality, the resumption of menstruation also depends on an individual's mental and physical health. Generally, a healthy individual without reproductive organ abnormalities, and within childbearing age, can ovulate and conceive in each cycle where sperm meets an egg.

1. How Long After a Miscarriage Does Menstruation Resume?

Menstruation typically returns 4–6 weeks after a miscarriage. This is because, after the miscarriage, the hormones in a woman’s body begin to normalize. It takes 4–6 weeks for the hormonal balance to be restored. During this time, the endometrium gradually recovers, and menstruation occurs once the endometrium has thickened sufficiently.

Women are advised to wait at least 2–3 menstrual cycles before trying to have a child again. Conceiving too soon increases the risk of next miscarriages. After a miscarriage, women should have a balanced diet and adequate rest, and only engage in sexual activity once menstruation resumes.

2. What should you do if Menstruation Does Not Return After Two Months?

If menstruation has not resumed two months after a miscarriage, it could indicate a new pregnancy.

This may happen because the endometrium has recovered but hasn’t shed, as it is developing further to support embryo implantation. If you had unprotected intercourse within two weeks after the miscarriage, there is a possibility of pregnancy because ovulation can occur during this period.

Another potential reason is structural abnormalities in the uterus, such as Intrauterine adhesions following inflammation, which prevent menstrual blood from being discharged.
In such cases, you should consult a doctor to assess your condition. Tests such as pregnancy tests and uterine ultrasounds may be recommended to determine whether you are pregnant or experiencing uterine issues that require medical attention.
