Details about Polygynax Vaginal Suppositories

Polygynax medication in the form of vaginal suppositories is a combination of antibiotics such as Neomycin, Polymyxin B, and Nystatin. Let's learn more about Polygynax vaginal suppositories used to treat vaginal infections in the article below.

1.What does Polygynax suppository do?

Polygynax suppository is a medication for treating local infections. In Polygynax vaginal suppositories, there is a combination of three active ingredients as follows:

  • Two types of antibiotics: Neomycin from the aminoglycoside group and Polymyxin B from the polypeptide group, both have bactericidal effects;
  • An antifungal: Nystatin from the polyene group, which has the effect of inhibiting or killing fungi, depending on the concentration of the drug and the sensitivity of the fungus.

Indications for Polygynax vaginal suppositories include:

  • Vaginitis, vulvovaginitis, nonspecific vaginitis-cervicitis (due to mixed bacteria), with or without fungal co-infection (Candida albicans);
  • Prophylaxis of vaginal infections due to bacteria and/or fungi before or after genital procedures.

Note: Polygynax vaginal suppositories are for adults only.

2. What to know before using Polygynax vaginal suppositories

Do not use Polygynax vaginal suppositories if:

  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to any of the active ingredients (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, or Nystatin) or any other excipients ;
  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to drugs in the same class as Neomycin (aminoglycosides), Polymyxin B (polypeptides), or Nystatin (polyene);
  • You are allergic (hypersensitive) to peanuts or soybeans because this product contains soybean oil;
  • You have kidney failure.

Polygynax vaginal suppositories are generally not recommended to be used together with spermicide products, such as local contraceptive methods, because the drug can reduce the effectiveness of spermicide products. Also, users should not use a vaginal diaphragm or latex condoms while using Polygynax suppositories, as it could cause the diaphragm or condom to rupture.
The use of the drug for pregnant or breastfeeding women should be prescribed by a doctor.

3. How to use Polygynax?

Always use Polygynax as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Always follow the prescribed dosage and treatment duration as directed by your doctor. The recommended dose is one suppository in the evening before sleep for 12 days.
Polygynax should only be used as a vaginal suppository. Do not swallow the vaginal capsule.
When inserting Polygynax, try to insert the capsule as deep into the vagina as possible, ideally while lying down. The easiest position for inserting the suppository is to lie on your back, with your knees bent and legs spread apart.
Use Polygynax vaginal suppositories regularly every day. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. In addition to treating with Polygynax vaginal suppositories, individuals with vaginitis should also follow basic hygiene practices to ensure effectiveness:

  • Use personal bath towels;
  • Wear cotton, loose, breathable underwear;
  • Avoid douching;
  • Avoid using vaginal tampons during the treatment;
  • Do not stop treatment during menstruation;
  • Treating your partner may be necessary in some cases.

Adhere to the prescribed treatment duration. Long-term use of Polygynax can lead to secondary infections due to drug resistance, auditory and renal toxicity, and an increased risk of allergic dermatitis. Additionally, due to the lack of data on the absorption of Neomycin and Polymyxin B through the vaginal mucosa, the risk of systemic effects of the drug, especially in patients with impaired liver or kidney function, cannot be ruled out.

4. Possible side effects of using Polygynax vaginal suppositories

Like all medications, Polygynax vaginal suppositories may cause certain side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Possible side effects include:

  • Rash or pimples at the application site;
  • Burning and irritation in the vaginal area;
  • Contact dermatitis (more common with prolonged or repeated use), with lesions that may occur locally or at a distance from the application site.

You should inform your doctor if you experience any side effects, even those not listed here.
In conclusion, Polygynax vaginal suppositories are a combination of broad-spectrum antibiotics Nystatin, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B, indicated for the treatment of bacterial and fungal vaginitis and nonspecific vaginitis in adults. To achieve optimal results, users should carefully understand the drug's effects, dosage, and usage, and combine it with daily hygiene practices. Simultaneous treatment for the partner in cases of vaginitis should also be considered.
