Erylik Gel is a topical acne medication for moderate acne. To achieve the best results, please follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
1. What is Erylik Gel, and when is it prescribed?
Erylik Gel is a topical medication used for treating moderate acne.It is available at Vinmec pharmacy and can only be purchased with a doctor's prescription
2. Ingredients and Directions for Use
Erylik gel contains two active ingredients: erythromycin and tretinoin. Erythromycin is an antibiotic that kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces skin inflammation. Tretinoin helps shed the tough, dead skin cells on the surface. Furthermore, it unclogs pores, and prevents the formation of new pimples. When pores are clear, sebum can flow out, limiting bacterial growth.
How to use Erylik gel: After washing and drying your skin, gently apply a thin layer of gel to the affected areas, avoiding the eyes, eyelids, lips, and nostrils. Wash your hands after application.
For the best results, follow your doctor’s instructions precisely. The usual dosage is 1-2 times per day. Do not exceed the prescribed amount, as this may cause skin irritation such as redness, dryness, or discomfort. The initial dose is typically once daily in the evening, and the frequency may be adjusted depending on how your skin responds.
If the gel causes noticeable irritation, reduce the application to every other day. Once your skin adjusts, you can return to daily use. Treatment duration varies but typically requires 3-4 months. Consistent use is essential. You may not see significant results in the first few weeks, but acne should improve noticeably by the sixth week, with optimal results by the twelfth week. After this phase, your doctor may recommend a maintenance schedule of 2-3 applications per week.
3. Side effects and precautions for effective use
The most common side effects of Erylik gel are skin irritation, including a mild burning or stinging sensation and temporary peeling when starting treatment. If you experience mild redness, moderate peeling, or a slight burning sensation, continue monitoring. However, if severe reactions occur, such as intense redness, peeling, swelling, or blisters, stop using the gel and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Rarely, Erylik gel may cause ulcers, dryness, burning, or changes in skin color. Dark-skinned individuals may notice temporary lightening of their skin, which returns to normal after stopping the gel.
Since the gel increases skin sensitivity to UV rays, avoid sun exposure or UV lamps to prevent further irritation. Protect your skin by wearing hats and using sunscreen, and adjust application frequency if needed. On days with significant sun exposure (e.g., a beach day), do not apply the gel the day before, the day of, or the day after. Wait until any sunburn heals before resuming treatment.
Additionally, do not use the gel if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have acute eczema, rosacea, acute dermatitis, sunburn, or are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
During the initial phase of treatment, acne may temporarily worsen. This is a sign the gel is working, and the condition will improve soon. To minimize irritation, avoid using harsh or drying cosmetic products such as makeup removers, astringents, or irritating agents (such as products containing fragrance or alcohol).
In addition to using Erylik gel, ensure you attend follow-up appointments as scheduled to adjust the dosage and minimize side effects.
