What is Erdosteine 300mg?

Erdosteine 300mg is used to treat acute cough symptoms in chronic bronchitis due to its mucolytic effect, which helps patients cough more easily. So, what is Erdosteine 300mg and how is it used?

1. What is Erdosteine 300mg?

Erdosteine 300mg capsules contain the active ingredient erdosteine at a concentration of 300mg, along with excipients such as microcrystalline cellulose, Povidone K-30, and magnesium stearate.

Erdosteine 300mg is a mucolytic drug indicated for thinning mucus in cases of acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Erdosteine 300mg is used according to a doctor's prescription.

Erdosteine 300mg is taken at a dosage of 1 capsule per dose, 2-3 times a day. When taking Erdosteine 300mg, patients should swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, either before or after meals.

2. Contraindications of Erdosteine 300mg

Erdosteine 300mg is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of Erdosteine 300mg.
  • Patients with cirrhosis, deficiency of the enzyme cystathionine-synthase.
  • Severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance < 25ml/min.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use Erdosteine 300mg (due to insufficient safety data).

Erdosteine 300mg is taken at a dosage of 1 capsule per dose, 2-3 times a day.

3. Precautions when using Erdosteine

300mg The following cases require extreme caution when using Erdosteine 300mg:

  • Patients with stomach ulcers
  • People with kidney and liver diseases
  • Caution when using Erdosteine 300mg for patients under 18 years old

4. Side effects of Erdosteine 300mg

Rare unwanted side effects (occurring in less than 0.01% of users) of Erdosteine 300mg include:

  • Stomach pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Eczema
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Changes in taste

Due to side effects such as headache and dizziness, caution is needed when using Erdosteine 300mg for patients who need to perform tasks requiring alertness, such as driving and operating machinery. For patients taking more than the recommended dose (900mg of Erdosteine per day), symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, and flushing may occur. 5. Interactions of Erdosteine 300mg with other drugs

Currently, there are no reports of interactions between Erdosteine 300mg and other drugs. Clinically, Erdosteine 300mg can be combined with antibiotics, bronchodilators (Theophylline...), β2-adrenergic receptor stimulants, and cough suppressants.

6. Mechanism of action of Erdosteine

Erdosteine is a derivative of mercapto-amino acid, existing in the form of thiolactone. It is a prodrug that, once inside the body, is metabolized into an active form and exerts a mucolytic effect. Erdosteine stabilizes mucus secretion, thins phlegm, and helps patients expel phlegm more easily (thanks to the free thiol groups in the Erdosteine metabolites that break the disulfide bonds of bronchial mucoproteins). Erdosteine has a protective effect on the bronchi, protecting the enzyme α1-antitrypsin by increasing the amount of IgA antibodies in the blood, enhancing the ability to fight bacteria. Additionally, the free thiol group of Erdosteine can inactivate oxidizing substances, particularly free oxygen radicals.

The advantage of Erdosteine 300mg over other thiol group drugs is that it causes less stomach irritation because the thiol (SH) group in the Erdosteine molecule is blocked by other groups.

After entering the body, Erdosteine is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with approximately 64.5% of Erdosteine binding to plasma proteins. Erdosteine is primarily excreted in the urine as a sulfate conjugate. Food has little effect on the absorption, metabolism, and excretion of Erdosteine 300mg. The accumulation of Erdosteine and its metabolites with repeated doses has not been fully studied.

Store Erdosteine 300mg at room temperature, away from moisture and light, and do not store Erdosteine 300mg in the bathroom or freezer. Read the storage instructions on the Erdosteine 300mg packaging or ask your pharmacist. Keep Erdosteine 300mg out of reach of children and pets. Before using Erdosteine, carefully weigh the risks and benefits, and consult your doctor for detailed information before using Erdosteine 300mg.
