Myonal: Therapeutic use, dosage and side effects

Myonal contains the active ingredient Eperisone hydrochloride, acting as a muscle relaxant, vasodilator which improve overall blood circulation. The medication has been proven to alleviate symptoms of hypertonia by disrupting the pathological pathway leading to muscle spasm. Myonal also alleviates symptoms of shoulder spasticity, neck pain, headache due to muscle tension, back pain and limbs spasticity from central nervous system disorders. Especially for encephalopathic patients, Myonal improves muscle strength and tone, promoting voluntary movements such as flexions and extension of the limbs.

 

1. Myonal Ingredients and Therapeutic Uses


With the effects of Eperisone, the medication can be prescribed for the following disorders:

  • Cervical Syndrome, Shoulder Periarthritis, lower back pain
  • Spastic paralysis in the following conditions: cerebrovascular diseases, spinal cord-induced spasticity, cervical spondylosis, postoperative complications (brain and spinal cord tumours), post-trauma complications (trauma to brain and spinal cord), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral palsy, degenerative central nervous system diseases, spinal cord vascular diseases, etc...

2. Myonal Dosage

Recommended dosage for safe use is as follow:

  • Adult should take 1 oral tablet at a time, 3 times per day after meals
  • A licensed physician can adjust the dosing regimen based on the severity of the patient's symptoms and needs.

3. Circumstances to Withhold Myonal and Safety Precautions

  • Do not take the medication if previously experienced reactions due to intolerance or sensitivity to Eperisonee.
  • Consider reducing or stopping the medication regimen if encounter the following symptoms: exhaustion, headache, drowsiness.
  • After taking the medication, refrain from engaging in demanding/strenuous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.
  • The safety of Myonal has not been evaluated for children use due to the lack of sufficient research and drug testing data. As such, it is not recommended to administer this medication to children
  • Myonal is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding patients due to safety precautions.
  • Cautious use if taken with methocarbamol due to previous evidence of drug interaction that may cause eye accommodation disorder when Myonal is taken with methocarbamol and tolperisone (tolperisone is a drug with a similar structure and therapeutic effect to Eperisone)

4. Side effects Myonal

Rare but severe side effects include shock, including anaphylactic shock, toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and oculomucocutaneous syndrome (Stevens-Johnson syndrome). Patients should immediately stop taking the medication and receive treatment if symptoms of fever, rash, blisters, itching, conjunctival congestion, or stomatitis are present.
Liver: Elevated liver enzymes level may occur but rarely
Kidneys and Urinary System: Proteinuria, increased BUN (blood urea nitrogen), anuria, or nocturia (involuntary urination at night) may rarely occur.
Gastrointestinal system: may cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, stomachache, and may rarely cause mouth sores. 
Nervous system: may cause drowsiness, insomnia, headache, peripheral numbness
Other organ systems: may cause weakness, exhaustion, fatigue, body soreness, daze, facial flushing and sweating.
